your dd got promoted to best class, so obviously it will be harder for her to maintain class position.. although i won't be surprised if she can do it since she is disciplined and independent.dyh:
Yes, as long as can maintain average or above average in class, ok already. So the release of the GEP pupils still reduces the stress because it pulls down the average mark too. Unless one gets class promotion lah, then more stress to maintain average.
As for me, I even 'lower' my expectation to 2% below class avg since she is w/o tuition (took away berries since Nov last year) and much less of my coachings. -

You are flattering her. As long as she continues to put in her best, I am happy. Actually, I am very glad that she does not have the mentality that since she is leaving the Singapore system soon that she can be easy with school learning. That, I give thanks.

What both of you said is true. My elder boy who was bordering ard 70, managed to get a A for his PSLE. We were expecting B.
Is that Why Some Forum-ers are saying that ....E3:
Once a week tuition is not sufficient to pull up the marks for PH's CL papers if your kids are not using enough mandarin. My dd used to be very good in CL, and speaks only mandarin. She had a good foundation. Nonetheless, I still let her do CL practices as often as possible, and read CL storybooks because she is speaking more of EL now and finding the CL's standard getting tougher. Though much work had been invested in CL, still, her CL CA1 marks dropped by about 6 marks compared to last year's CA1. I guess in order to do well for PH's papers, the tutor needs to truly understand the standard of PH's CL. I have seen many school's CA1 papers, none can really match up to the difficulty of PH's CL paper. Just my 2-cents.
PH PSLE results generally is about 10 points or more compared to the actual Prelim Results?
If the child only attends once a week tuition, it is really hard to keep up 90+ range in upper pri lvl. This applies not only to CL, but also EL. Must READ, no other shortcuts. Tutor cant do magic. -

How is their fee likes? What did they cover? I'm look at either a 1-1 tuition or an enrichment centre at Bukit Timah Plaza if better... There is a 1-1 tuition quoted me $40per hour, I find it rather steep... Is that the norm rate for 1-1 chinese tuition?
I dun remember the fee for Hua Cheng, paid some time ago. Shld be what ruat2 has posted in the previous page. Xue Lin fees is slightly higher than Hua Cheng. The owner at Xue Lin is very approachable, you can just walk in to chat with her.
At the moment, I understand both centres hv small class size.
I hv yet to arrange 1-1 tuition or ask abt 1-1 rates, so cant help you here.
Like I mentioned earlier, do not think once a week tuition is going to help. Must speak, listen and read on your own.
Hua Cheng's ACE enrichment programme covers the textbook vocabulary and also incorporates 3 compo assignments and oral practice nearing SA exam periods. -
Actually her chinese tuition twice a week , likewise for my k1 who does not speak mandarin . I don't have much time to teach them myself as I work and travel.

Tat's what I'm worry... paying such a high rate and did not manage to see the result.. My ds aso weak in comprehension.... *Sigh* still exploring to see what suit him better.GyGy:
[quote=\"hl124273\"]However, I feel that she is not producing results. My daughter was getting high 90s in Primar y1 PHPPS end of the year exam, and her recent CA1 P2 higher chinese result is only 85, losing most marks in her comprehension (15 marks for compre). Prior to the CA test, this tutor told me to go get the past yr exam papers and she gave them to my gal as home work and feedbacked that my gal is weak in comprehension and told me to get comprehension assessment books ( my gal has quite a few assessment books already). However, I see no improvement.

PH sets tough papers so that PSLE seems 'easier'. Hubby and son redo CA1 Maths and the Section B kept hubby thinking until close to 1130 last night. I showed the recent CA1 CL paper to tutor so that she knows the standard and questions given.
Tuition once a week and I have no idea how to groom him for compo
Same goes for EL compo. -

I recently bou a EPH's PSLE English Model Composition by Lee Lin Cher. It covers many types of compo topics, coupled with suggested approaches, a set of vocabulary and exercises. So far, I hv got my P4 boy to read page 1 to 11 (pointers on how to write a good compo).PH sets tough papers so that PSLE seems 'easier'. He independently completed a draft for the sch Mar hols compo assignment and has since finished the final copy on his own. I hv not read his compo. Crossing my fingers his work gets better review this time. -

Hi JRLam - next time plan the TT without letting your kids know what's instore for them, then less complaints from them, but more surprises later ..hehehe....

Hi Mum1113 - but I believe in getting them to be involved in the process, agree on what to accomplish, the pace etc, make sure they know that they 'own' the plan. I think that could instill in them a bit of ownership? If they complain about too much, can't finish or too difficult later, I can say that they did the timetabling with me then ... but of course, the fact that I am still the one to champion it, goes to show that there's still a long way for them to REALLY take the ownership to plan it themselves .. hope that day will come sooner rather than later ..
I always tell myself - if I plan they achieve eg X by exam day, they may only achieve X -2. But If I didn't even plan, they will probably only achieve X -5

I am paying her $60 a 1.5 hour for my P2 who started with her since she was in P1 , and I just started my K1 younger gal with her and she charges $50 a lesson ( 1 hr) for pre-primary. My younger girl has little exposure to mandarin and hence I wanted her to start early. Also, both have lessons twice a week since that is the tutor's recommendation.
I thought $40/hr for lower pri is alot  . Mine is charging $20/hr, and she is very sought after by alot of parents in my place. Her students include RGPS' too. Also, I don't think lower Pri needs twice-a-week, in my opinion, unless they are really weak (which yours are definitely NOT with 85 marks in P2 CA1), or those from non-Chinese background. Upper Pri maybe a different story though.
Unfortunately my tutor's schedule is fully-packed, otherwise will recommend u to her. She told me she has to turn down interested parents ..
