2011 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

Leanne, thanks for sharing. Good and sound advice.
DS is not high ability and cannot absorb from last min cramping. Hence, slow and steady, whatever we can cover, is my strategy.
Maths 90s range in P5, to me, is very good! Great job you and your ds did. -
Pixiedust,
Thanks, ds still has got room to improve.
As parent, we try to do whatever that is best for them.Everyone hopes the child to excel.
Am not sending ds to any camp as he has his own mindset and way in doing math, unless he is very convinced with the method.DS is very stubborn.Sometime he has to learnt it in a hard way.
Just like this speed topic, he goes a long long way , and finally today manage to see some light...
We dont do last min cramping too.We do whatever we can. Before math paper, ds sleeps extra early.
Cheers

Hi pixiedustHi Brenda, indeed pattern is one category.
It also include problems as follows :
- 'The ration of the number of apples to the number of oranges was 10:3.
When 50 apples and 40 oranges were added, the ration became 3:1. How many apples were there at first?' {this one overlaps with onSponge}
- 'What is the maximum number of 2-cm square cards that can be cut from a vanguard sheet 20cm by 25cm'
-\"John answered 100 questions in a test. For every correct answer, he received 1mark, For every incorrect answer, 2 marks were deducted from his final score. He scored 73 marks. How many questions did John answer incorrectly?\"
It is not structured like onSponge,Fan or topic-by-topic but specific quick insights to certain problems.
I guess the camps also cover such areas.
Sorry for the late reply as just finish watching the last CL episode.
Thank you for sharing. Like what Leanne has mentioned and I think all these books do provide us the idea and method to solve the maths questions. -
Leanne:
Still marvellous. Your kids didn't protest, so good.Pixidust,
Different child has got different study pattern.
I know some do very last min, yet do very well.Bottom line, its the quality of the work done rather than the quantity.
Just to share, last year, ds did all his sa1 and sa2 math well in advance, in the end, din do very well.Comparing to some classmates of his, its really nothing close.
Thus , we have learnt, its to pace according to the child standard .

Aiyoh. Don't say like that lah. I'm sure you are one of the most motivated and energetic parents.I do agree the questions are not new but they try to sell that they are using efficient solution aka 'tricks'.
eg. 'What is the maximum number of 2-cm square cards that can be cut from a vanguard sheet 20cm by 25cm' Solution :
20/2=10
25/2=12.5->12 (use the smaller whole number)
10x12=120
Ans: 120 cards
Note: The answer is not (20x25) / (2x2) = 500 /4 = 125 cards <-- this is would be my ds's first solution
Hope I was able to share my 2cents worth.
I am really amazed by everyone's motivation level and energy. Puts me to shame, I am too lax, unable to 持之以恒. -

Of course some parents go to extreme lenghts and they also have extrememly coperative dd/ds. But we should work consistently together with our kids to match their ability, style and pace. -
Hello everyone,
How time flies, holidays is coming to an end.How is holidays for everyone?
Its a good break for us, cos no need to rush to school early in the morning.
I spent time sorting out all the past year papers cos it has been so messy.Just wonder, what is the difference in sa1 and prelim paper for math, can anyone advice?thanks

Leanne:
I guess SA1 will have more Qs on the recently taught topics like speed and circles while prelims should be more balanced i.e. all the topics. Just my guess. Hope some math teacher/tutor can clarify for us.Hello everyone,

We watch three show for this school holiday and dd also enjoy some books like Sir Fong's Adverntures in Science.
Not yet start the prelim papers but for SA1 papers we came across questions on circle, speed, volume and pie chart etc Guess prelim will be 大团圆. -

Hi Leanne,
I think the SA1 paper and Prelim should be covering the same contents _ by then, most schools should have finish the whole PSLE syllabus. However, the SA 1 paper may have more questions coverage for the new topics covered in P6 to ensure testing and foundation of these topics. The prelim paper will be more like overall all in one.
