I have a suggestion. The first post contributor of the new PH thread will have to update the list of PH parents like what Jen did in the first page of the current thread ...... until such time a newer PH thread emerges when we cross the next 1,000 page milestone.

For P2, there will be compos (paper 1) for EL which will be out of 15 marks. They are required to write a story based on 4 pictures in 50 mins.


For P2 SA1 CL Paper 1, the time allocated was 1 hour 20 mins. The kid is supposed to construct 5 造句 (10 marks) and 看图写话 (10 marks). For 看图写话, it's to write a one-para coherent, fluent story of min 40 chars. However, it's better to write more as advised by most teachers because after cancelling out the erroneous sentences or chars, the compo will be less than 40 chars, thus marks will be deducted.

When it comes to SA2 CL Paper 1, the same components will be assessed, but time will be reduced to 1 hour, thus the kids have to think and write faster, this is in preparation for them to write proper paragraphed CL compo from P3 onwards in 40 mins.

I am not sure what's the current understanding of CL teachers across the board for P2 as P1 had gone en-bloc last year. For CH2 last year, the CL T expected them to write at least 120 -150 chars.

Hi E3 - Thanks for the detailed write-up! You are amazing, how could you remember all these in such details? :shock: I can't even remember the CA1 format which my P2 dd just did .. hahaha .. And you pre-read and screen the essays for your dd? Wow, really 一分耕耘，一分收获, for both u and your dd :salute: So if as parents, we are 'half-past-6', and the kids as well .. hahaha.. then who can we blame for 'half-past-6' results!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!

My gal has a good rapport with her, and with everyone else too cos my gal is likeable and easy to get along with. She told me she likes both the current and new tutor and didn't know which to choose.

When I came home, she told me she wants the current tutor to continue, and at her study desk, I found a note that she wrote which reads \" tell mommy that I still want tutor Chen(and not other tutors\" .. I asked her about the note, and she said she wanted this current tutor, nothing against the new tutor as she likes the new tutor too.

I sat her down to explain why I didn't like the current tutor :

1 - She insisted on twice a week tuition since P1, and will not take once a week, reason being that you can only see results with twice a week tuition. I started to doubt this.

2- She commented that I should not let my gal skip lessons for 2 weeks during last Dec holiday, as this is an important period for revision, alluding to the point that my gal has forgotten many of the words learnt in P1. I do not readily agree with her comment because everyone needs a break, and 2 weeks is not going to be detrimental to a kid's learning just like that .. plus, in June last yr, she initiated a 2 week break in June holidays as she is visiting her hometown in China so by the same reason, I could have use that as a contributing factor too. I somehow felt that the 2 weeks has cost her to lose some \"income\" given that other parents could have gone on holidays too. She has 40+ or 50 students, imagine 60 a lesson and twice a week compulsory, so she could be drawing 5 digit a month, clocking 320 lessons a month. Her statement made me feel \"obligated\" to have tuition for my gal during one month holidays otherwise it becomes a \"reason\" for her to use against any weaknesses spotted.

3 - I checked with 2 of my colleagues who used her service for a few years, and one of them feedbacked to me that they dropped her because she overextended herself i.e. too many students and quality suffers. Also, she gave tonnes of homework to the point that my colleague's kid will throw a tantrum ( my gal did too for a while ! ) .. how much home work ? well, roughly 5 pages of xie zi (using those medium square excercise book), 10 pages of assessment books .. that is for one lesson;s homework .. so you can imagine how \"advanced\" my gal is ahead of the lessons taught . e.g. school is teaching chapter 1, my gal is chapter 4 or 5. The other colleague feedbacked to me that this tutor sleeps during tutoring his son last year, so I did a check with my gal and confirmed that. MY gal told me she has to wake the tutor up, but my gal also kinda sympathise with the tutor telling me \"mommy, u know she has to wake up at 6 am everyday that is why she is tired\" .. and I have solved this \"sleeping\" issue by reminding tutor asking if she is always tired esp having so many students at hand .. and she got the hint and never slept in class again.

4 - I spot checked now and then, and last year, spotted a few mistakes and showed the tutor and she said she could have \"looked too quickly\" or something to that effect. I let it go. Just now, my gal showed me a chinese comprehension that the new tutor did with her yestyerday verbally ... verbally cos the new tutor didn't want my gal to write the answers down in the assessment book for fear that the current tutor may know .. so I looked at that passage and asked my gal if she understood that passage, and I tested my gal using some of the words in the compre passage, such as \"hu tu\" (blur) , \"deng\" (stare) etc .. today, the current tutor came and gave that same compre to my gal as home work (not knowing that my gal alreayd has the new tutor went thru that passage already). in that compre passage, i saw 2 hanyu pin yin written above some words in the passage, and I asked my gal which tutor wrote the han yu pin yin for those 2 characters .. she said it was current tutor. I asked my gal if the current tutor explained those 2 words that she wrote pin yin above the character, my gal said no. Neither did the tutor read thru the passage with her, so it's just giving her as a home work to do by herself, and that 2 pin yin written there so that my gal knows how to \"pronounce\" that 2 words. I didn't agree with this method - I recalled the PeiHwa teacher told me (during parents teachers meeting) that we should get the kid to read out the passage, and in every paragraph, ask the kid to paraphrase or explain to show that she understands .. and to read out the passage a few times.

Sigh! now my gal who just finished her lesson with this current tutor told me she changed her mind and prefer this exiting tutor, and now told me that the teacher did explained everything to her, not just rote learning.
I wonder why she sings a diff tune now. Did askl her if the tutor said anything to her, she said no .. my gal said yesterday when she told me those stuffs as to whether tutor explained her mistakes or not, she was uunsure and \"forgot\" ..

My thoughts on yr current situation.
U prob have to ask yrself if you are willing to give a 2nd chance to the prev tutor (and face the same prob) or just charge on and move on to the new tutor. Is there a good rapport btw yr kids and the prev tutor?
Fr what I gathered fr yr sharings, she seems to either lack the passion to teach, or she may hv too much on her plate, or her style of tutoring (which may work and produce results for some children) just prob didn't work on yr children.
I had once hired a pte tutor to coach my elder dd on Math. After a few lessons, I called her and discussed with her that I do not want to continue the sessions. She had a chat with me and tried to find out the reason and she was kind enough to not even ask for notice period. She agrees totally that the rapport between tutor and the child is crucial.
Alternatively, you may want to consider doing once a week session with the new tutor and enrol for once a week session in a Chin enrichmt centre where they can learn in a group environment, which somestimes makes learning more fun and interactive. Just my thots

The exam formats for the papers cannot be found on the web. This forum is where you'll usually find the info.

Btw, I hope there's no change to the time allocation and formats cos nowadays, lots of changes going on. :?

Yes, there'll be helping words. My advise is to start training her to get used to writing compositions as often as possible. Dd used to write from pictures from Picture Compositions 2 by Terry Bell, published by Learners Publishing.

Previously,I bought some model composition book for P2 from SAP publisher and some compo assessment books , got her to try just now.
Any tips on how to \"spot\" potential compo topics ? :lol: I figured that those done in class will not be repeated in any way.

Hey P5/P6 parents with kids on HCL -

Can I check with you how the book 水浒传 was taught in your dd/ds’ class? My son told me that his CL T has NEVER taught them (ie read or explain the content in the book), but let them watch the video records instead. This may not be a bad idea, since it can be quite interesting, but unfortunately, the kids, who hardly watch any CL shows, let alone this type of 古装show, are totally confused! Well, at least my son is. To make matter worse, the CL T doesn’t show the entire story in sequence, but skips some chapters randomly. I reckon she maybe running out of time to finish the book! My son, who is very interested in such 古装武侠 stories, completely catch no-ball! T didn’t even ask them to go home and read in advance (they won’t understand it anyway).
I am just wondering, is this the way that this book should be taught? Or is it the case for this particular CL T only?
Now I have to read and explain every chapter to him (and must catch up with his CL T’s speed as well, which I must say, is very unpredictable since she ‘jumps’ chapter as and when she likes), to rekindle his interest in CL stories (so long as it is CL!). Otherwise, I won’t be surprised he will BAN CL book becoz they all look so chim!
