      hi everyone here…

      i was reading this thread and i was totally amazed! really…!!

      i always hv challenging maths questions from my boy… he always accumulate it to ask his tutor who only has lessons with him once a week due to limited slots…

      it’ll be so helpful if i could get solutions here n try to explain to him…

      1]. At first, Tom had 2/3 as many stickers as Edward. After Tom bought another 8 stickers and Edward lost 5, Tom had 4/5 as many stickers as Edward. Find the number of stickers Tom had at first.

      2]. There are 200 people in a party. What is the minimum number of people whose birthday fall in the same month?

      3]. What is the largest 5-digit number which is a multiple of 2, 3 and 5? How many 5-digit numbers are there which are multiples of 2, 3 and 5?

      Thanks in advance.

        2)
        N + (N – 1) + ( N – 2 ) + … + ( N – 10 ) + X = 200
        11N - 55 + X = 200
        X = 255 – 11N
        Since X > 0

        Smallest value of X is when N = 23
        X = 255 – 253 = 2
        Minimum number of people whose birthday fall on the same month = 2

        3]. What is the largest 5-digit number which is a multiple of 2, 3 and 5? How many 5-digit numbers are there which are multiples of 2, 3 and 5?

        3)
        LCM of (3, 4 and 5) = 30

        99999 divide 30 = 33333.3
        Largest 5-digit number which is a multiple of 2, 3 and 5 = 3333 x 30 = 99990

        Largest 4-digit number which is divisible by 2, 3 and 5 = 333 x 30 = 9990

        Therefore, number of 5-digit numbers divisible by 2, 3 and 5 = (99990 – 9990) / 30 = 3000

                    Q5

                    1/2 x AD x BC = 1/2 x BE x AC
                    AD = 20 x 18/ 24 = 15
                    x = 15cm

                      Q7
                      Name the columns A,B,C and D from left to right and the rows 1,2, 3 and 4 from top to bottom.

                      Notice the pattern below :
                      C3 = C4 + D4 + D3
                      5 = 1 + 3 + 5

                      B2 = B3 + C3 + C2 = 7 + 5 + 7 = 19

                      Check

                      A1 = A2 + B2 + B1 = 35 + 19 + 35 = 89 - OK

                      x = 19

                        Hi

                        http://postimage.org/image/34ur6epyc/

                        Q2.

                        200/12 = 16R8, so at least 16 people had birthday in the same month.

                        Q3.

                        LCM of (2,3,5) = 30
                        Range of 5-digit number : 10000 to 99999
                        Smallest multiple of 30 = 10020, and largest = 99990

                        10020/30 = 334, 99990/30 = 3333

                        Number of multiples of 30 from 10020 to 99990 = 3333-334+1 = 3000

                        cheers.

                        cheers.
