Oh my god, I can’t believe this! I just bought 2 pairs of pinhole glasses from Daiso, and i removed my contacts of minus 3.75, and I could actually read the words on my computer screen through the pinhole glasses!
It is not 20/20 reading, I know for sure, as I also have high astig, but, the words ‘KiasuParents’ on top of the screen is so clear!!! And I am typing this with my pinhole on - without glasses or contacts!
Now, I’ve faith that my eyesight will improve in time! Not just my children’s! -

hi, what is reading glasses?I read this thread, hoping to find answers for the use of reading glasses - as opposed to distance glasses, and am surprised that no one has mentioned it.
Has anyone come across this website? http://www.preventmyopia.org/index.html
I've asked around optical shops in my area, and sure enough, none suggests the use of reading glasses. Perhaps not enough research has been done to prove, or perhaps, using this method really sends the optical business to doom? -
Hi Baney8, reading glasses are the same as those used for people above the age of 40 who have difficulties reading short distance. - lao hua yan jing.
The prescribed method is to add 3 diopters to the existing negative power. E.g. if your child is prescribed to be -1 on both eyes, you will give him reading glasses with power of +2 instead of the conventional -1 distance glasses. The reading glasses is to be used for all close work only, especially when your child spends extensive amount of time reading. This will make reading possible at a farther distance of one third meter (instead of having the kids drawing the books nearer and nearer for legibility. It is when the book is read at this distance and pushed a little further that it helps relax the ciliary muscles of the eyes, and possibility of reversing the myopic eye.
The myopic eye is elongated. For mild myopia, reversing the elongation of the eye caused by myopia due to long hours of close work is said to be possible. The worst case ever is to have the child put on the conventional distance glasses, thereby locking in the elongated eye, giving no chance whatsoever for relaxing and reversing. This, is supposedly the reason why when you are put on glasses for distance vision, your power will only increase and not go down. This is how opticians lock in your money. -
amylqf, how long was your girl on reading glasses? Did you have her power checked to see the progress? It should at least control the myopia instead of escalating it. Did you manage to prescribe from optical shop or bought off the shelf?
On pinholes, I am currently using them for myself to test if my myopia can be reversed. I am just touching 40 and my myopia has come down doe to lao hua. But due to extensive wearing of soft lenses, I have developed super dry eyes, and I am trying as much as possible to free my eyes. At the moment, pinhole glasses can be used at home, but wierd to be seen out-of-house...

The thing is that children seldom the the discipline as adult, it is hard to remind them whole day, especially when they are in school.
well, for your Lao Hua case, the degree with drop as your lao hua goes up, so can't really measure the pure effect unless you use on the child.
Well, looking forward to hear from you in the near future. -
Here's another reading on plus lenses. It is the summary of the entire research paper.

hi there,
would like to find out if this myovision lenses is available at any spectacle shop? Or which ones carry these lenses?
Am quite upset that my girl has to get spectacles…willing to try anything to stop the progression.
Going to ask the eye doc about this reading glasses method as well…
Thank you. -
Many optometrists/ optical shops sell it. It is the better choice if your child tends to strain his eyes. It contains negative lens on top to view far and positive below for viewing close distance. However, I was not very convinced about what my optometrist said about the plus part, hence did not get one for my son. According to him, the ‘positive part’ is actually zero (plano), not really plus.
Personally, I think the bifocal is better than progressive since there is no way your child would use the negative power to view near distance. The only thing is that it has a line in between which is unconventional for a child to wear…
Your difficulty may lie in getting the degree of ‘plus’ because there is very little known / practiced guidelines for the optometrist.
My kids are on plus lenses now for all close work, and keeping healthy eye habits, with lots of effort on my part in educating them about their eyes.
It helps to have an eye chart stuck on a well-lit part of your home for regular checks.
All the best! -
