One more question on water… when you top an open container of water with a layer of oil, does no water (at all) evaporate?

If a layer of oil covers the water, then water can't evaporate. -

Thanks, Belle. I agree with you, but in an exam paper that showed an experiment, the answer given upheld that some loss of water was observed after 3 days. This is a little confusing; unless some water does indeed get evaporated in the process. I have tried to sort this out from other sources... to no avail. Perhaps, the given answer is incorrect? -
Need some help to sort out my understanding on Water and evaporation.
The PSLE Science guidebook says “Evaporation occurs all the time and at any temperature below boiling point.”
In another Science book, I read “Water evaporates at all temperatures above zero degrees.”
Does water evaporation take place only within these two limits? Pls help. -

Yes, evaporation occurs at temperatures above 0 deg C and below 100 deg C.Need some help to sort out my understanding on Water and evaporation.

If is at or below 0 deg C, then water is ice; no evaporation to talk about.
if is at 100 deg C, then we are talking about steam, so no evaporation to talk abou too. -
If the guidebk is SEAB ‘approved’, it’s quite safe to stick to the prescribed answers.
For things like past yr papers and generic revision activity bks, if in doubt abt answers, better to ask the school teachers as sometimes these answer keys may not be correct. -

Thank you, Nebbermind, for your advice. I will write to the science teacher, but sometimes, teachers take a long time to reply.... and you know how a child, waiting for an answer, can lose heart in the process of waiting. If the guidebk is SEAB 'approved', it's quite safe to stick to the prescribed answers.

One more question, but what is SEAB 'approved'? I'm new on the scene, and sometimes, don't get the abbreviations.
Thank you. -
Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board.
They have a list of publishers for the compilation of psle past yr papers…believe the answers given shd be vetted by SEAB.
there’s also an orange coloured science revision book which I think most schools used in 2010. no sure but think it’s also so-called seab approved -
Thank you, Nebbermind, for all your help. I will google for the list of publishers authorised by SEAB. The guide book I have is orange, and is published by Marshall Cavendish. I was impressed by their presentation… also, they published my daughter’s science textbooks used by her school. That should be okay, I guess?

Can someone tell me if 1/2 mark is given in the exam?
