      Dear all KSP,

I’ve great difficulty trying to teach maths modelling questions to my DS. Seeking help to share ideas and methods… and what kind of aids / assessment books are useful?

The problem is I can show him 1 type, but everytime the questions change a bit, he’ll get confused and lost…

      Some sample questions

      1. Lycia has 10 more sweets than Yi Hui. Yi Hui has 3 sweets left after giving away 4 sweets. How many sweets does Lycia have?

      2. Elicia has 18 bookmarks. She gives away 3 bookmarks to Cherine. If Cherine has the same number of bookmarks as Elicia now, how many bookmarks does Cherine have at first?

        2 stars & 1 circle = 180

        1 star & 1 circle = 90
        1 star & 1 rectangle + 160

        What’s value of rectangle ?

Let me know if you have answer

          1 star + 90 = 180

          1 star + 1 rectangle = 160

          1 rectangle = 160 - 1 star = 160 - 90 = 70 (Ans)

Has anyone got a Internet link to a site that can take DC through the use of models in maths. This is for P2 Maths.

So far, I have downloaded a P2 worksheet from Cybersource. DS1 will attempt this in his afterschool club tomorrow.

However, to put into context we had attempted the following question from EPH P2 Challenging Maths,a nd it was best attempted using a model:

A, B and C are 3 numbers. A is more than B. C is less than B. How much more or less than A is C?

In summary, I am looking for a site that can give easy guidance on understanding and creating heuristic models? Can anyone recommend a site?

Can't really help you by providing the web link... but I remember reading many websites on model drawings in the forum... do you want to do a search?

I have not got the book to hand, but it is the examples in Chapter 2, Examples 1 or 2.

It is the new edition of the book, I bought it a few months ago.

PS, what do you think of the book. I think it is great.

okay, mine printed in 2006. I couldn't find the same q. yes, not bad. the book formatted in different way. there are sub topics like terms to note, examples, take note then the questions. And the Qs are arranged sec A type Qs and sec B type Qs. last one is creative thinking. but I have no time to do that. already planned, and sticking to my timetable..... 😉
