      I am looking at specific picture composition guide book (not guide books that teach how to write, but model picture compo with good vocab) and so far is only satisfied with Primary 3 Zoom In Vocabulary For Creative Writing; my only complain is that it is too thick and quite limited picture compo choices. Some of the other publisher's model essays are either without pictures or not categorized according to topics. I personally find SAP Compo not creative enough. I also cannot stand unclear or drawings that are not nice. :oops:

      Don't know whether did you see this book when you were at Popular? I was like you - sourcing for a model compo book for my DD1. I find this book quite useful (in my own opinion) because:-
      1) It has an introuduction on mind-mapping
      2) Each compo has a list of noteworthy vocabulary

      My DD1's tutor has taught her about mind-mapping so this book comes in handy when I passed to her. She read it leisurely - at her own pace and timing :D. She would use the high-lighter to highlight the new vocab word or sentence that she learns.

      This is my own sharing on the book and recommend to you :rahrah:

        Thanks for the recommendation. Will take a look. Think I briefly browse through and put it back onto the shelf because I was looking at model essay books.
        May I know if your dd1's tutor recommend how long should one spend on mindmapping? My child did learn mindmapping in school, but his mind map is very basic (usually in the form of questions) and in the end, his compo is essentially his one-line answers to these mindmap questions. :roll:

          My DD1 told me that the tutor spent approximately 45 minutes engaging them in discussion and mind-mapping. At P3 level, her mind mapping is usually very \"short & sweet\" and with the assistance from the tutor. I can see that the tutor also taught them to use good phrases and new vocab words to enchance the content πŸ˜„ . They will spend the other 45 minutes to write their compo.

                SAP is success publication? I've the P1/P2 creative writing blue book by success publication. My dd doesn't like to read it, she said boring :roll:

                Casco has a phrases book. Only comprises model essays. You might want to check it out as it contains more essays. It's smaller in size than zoom in vocab series, with 'not nice' pictures though :lol:

                Can't say it's fantastic. That's why still looking around for creative writing books

                  Will look at Casco phrases book again. Think have to lower my expectations about the quality of pictures because I am currently short of good essays to guide my child. For the last 2 weeks, I have been trying to get my child to do English Compo weekly. To date, he has done 2 topics with each topics having 2 different pictures. I let him look at a model essay of the given topic (eg accident) and do first draft based on the same picture. He usually give me back an essay that is 70-80% similar, inclusive of the model essay's fanciful vocab because of his good short term memory. Then the following day, I gave him a different picture of the same topic (eg accident again; I use CL Compo book interchangeably due to lack of picture resources). From this second compo then I am able to see his real weaknesses and it is encouraging that he can still retain and use correctly 30-40% of the previous model essay's vocab. I am currently experimenting with this 'technique' with CL compo too to see if it yields any results. How do you guide your child in composition writing?

                  SAP is different from Success Publication. SAP's logo is a seahorse (i think); Success logo is like a 'pinwheel'. The blue p1/p2 success guidebook you are talking about, I have the yellow p3/p4 copy. My child can use 1-2 phrases from each scenerio, I am happy. Coincidentally, his form teacher uses phrases from this same book to add onto their spelling list (my child saw her book)....so must be some good. πŸ˜„

                      Yes, I guess mindmapping is time consuming for a start. Sadly, I have no such skills to teach my child. Vocab-wise, I am depending on model essays for assistance. All in, that is, including reading through model essays, model phrases and first draft, my child spends around 2hrs for one compo topic. Add on another hour for second compo of same topic, weekly compo writing exercise can be quite time-consuming. 😞
