Need help on the below questions:
1) a man is 4 times as old as his son. 4 years ago he was 6 times as old as his son. What is the present age of father and son (ans: 40 and 10 yrs old)

Given the ratio of the age of the man to his son is 4 : 1

The present age of father = [ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][4] = 6 * 6 + 4 =40 yrs old (Ans)

The present ae of son = [ ][4] = 6 + 4 = 10 yrs old (Ans)

2) Lee bought 4 times as many toy cars as teddy bears. She spent $1750 altogether. A toy car cost $10 less than a Teddy bear. Total cost of toy car was $490 more than total cost of Teddy bears.
A) how much did lee spend on the Teddy bears? (ans: $630)
B) how much did one Teddy bear cost? $18

Cost of Teddy bears + Cost of Toy Cars = 1750

Cost of Teddy bears + Cost of Teddy bears + 490 = 1750

Cost of Teddy bears = (1750 - 490) / 2 = $630 (Ans)

B)

Toy Cars [ ][ ][ ][ ] 4u

Teddy Bears [ ] 1u

Cost of 1u of Toy Cars = (1750 - 630) / 4 = 280

Cost of 1u of Teddy Bears = 630

Difference in cost for 1u of toys = 630 - 280 = 350

Difference in cost for 1 piece of toy = 10

Number of Teddy Bears = 350 / 10 = 35

Cost of 1 pc of Teddy Bears = 630 / 35 = $ 18 (Ans)

3) Lim was reading a book. On the first day, the number of pages he read was 2/5 of the number of pages unread. On the second day, he read another 24 pages. As a result, the number of pages he read was 5/9 of the number of pages unread. If he had to complete reading the book in another 4 days, what was the average number of pages he had to read a day for the rest of the book? ( ans: 54 pages)

Since the total units of books should be the same , change the total units of books to 14u

Read Unread Total

+24pages -24pages

5u 9u 14u

5u - 4u = 24
1u = 24

Total number of pages unread = 9u = 9 * 24 = 216

The average number of pages he had to read a day for the rest of the book = 216 / 4 = 54 pages (Ans)

You're welcome. I think the standard is getting tougher compare to few years back.

BTW, the following is the Q2 working:

Information from question:
1d + 3c = $28
1d + 5c = $40

1d + 3c + 2c = $40
$28 + 2c = $40
2c = $40 - $28
2c = $12
1c = $6

Therefore, one chicken costs $6.00
