      Hi cwc,

You have a lucky problem...my son finds Maths at P5 very tough. I have Challenging Maths (but kept it up as he finds it tough) and Onsponge (school teacher ordered for class). For Challenging Maths (Ammiel Wan), the questions inside are not from specific chapters like ratio for eg...so it's really hard to draw a comparison.
      Hi Janet,
thanks for the info....I feel very paisay after reading all the mommies sharing their knowledge. You must have spent a lot of time on your kids' work cos' each of you are so detailed and aware of the syllabus, questions, methods etc. I have been rather 'lazy' for the last 1+ years (partly due to family constraint hence my 'big' plan to study with my kids were shelved). So I'm still in a maze right now  Time for me to buck up!!!

For my son, I do feel rather lucky that he's quite independent, otherwise I would have been rather stressed. But I do feel apologetic towards him, I didn't have enough time and energy to pay much attention to him and didn't really stretch him even tho he has the potential. Guess gotta start catching up cos' next year PSLE plus I believe my P4 DD will face trouble in Maths next year.....

So first must find something tough to challenge DS 😉 But seriously, every child is different, hard to be strong in every subject. Like my DS and DD are both not too good in English and Science......I believe a lot to do with being a late reader and not reading enough.

My kids are not avid readers...now realizing and regretting.
Need to pump up my son's vocab as well as his compo.

However, I've kept up Ammiel Wan's Challenging Maths. Don't want to drill him too extensively this year. Plan to work on some questions in his Onsponge recommended by teacher, since it's so thick and not possible to finish every single question.

Think my son's school realised they didn't push enough last year as the cohort did rather badly in PSLE (from my point of view). Hence this year, I see them pushing a lot harder from P5.

I actually bought Challenging Maths last year thinking of letting my then P4 son try 8), fortunately was lazy. When the P5 booklist came, I just pass to him to use in school. A*Star (from LearningInteractive) was the other one which I think is pretty tough but my son enjoying it.

OnSponge, can you share which are the questions the teacher ask them to do? Right now, I just get my son to do all the odd number questions....in the event he cannot finish, the sister takes over next year 🙂 But seems like my son does not want to continue with OnSponge as he finds it 'easy'....I'll have to go through his earlier work first before I know if he's really getting them right 😉

Now, hoping to hear from NickleBee Tutors to see if they can recommend more challenging books for my son.

Don't have Onsponge with me now...so can't see which questions are done. Of late, the teacher has been giving several pages of Maths prob sums from My Pals Maths Homework Book.

              Hi Janet,
no problem......should you have it and remember, just let me know. But if it's too tedious, dun bother.....in anycase, I'll still ask DS to do all the odd numbers, I'm sure I'll strike some 🙂

                Hi CWC,

                Challenging Maths Assmt Bk

Not sure whether you have this book : Problem Solving Processes in Mathematics by Fabian Ng (EPH). This Bk is all on problem sums. According to my son, who's q.strong in Maths, this Bk is challenging. We have the P6 Bk, q.sure there's an equivalent for P5. :celebrate:

                  Hi QuiteKSMum,
Thanks. Will take a look on my next Popular trip on Wed. May just jump ahead to get the P6 😉 ..... cos son claims he already knows Ratio & Percentage/Circle/Speed.....only left with Algebra. In fact, he went ahead to start on the EPH PSLE Exam Yr 2006 - 2010 and has completed the section on numbers. Will mark and see how he fares.

Actually sometimes, I hope the neighbourhood school will set tougher papers cos' when kids score well, they may have a false impression and start getting complacent. But then, the weaker ones will be demoralised......sigh....no solution I guess. Maybe schools should have HIGHER Maths....ha ha.

By the way, just wanted to share this…

I had accidentally bought 2 PSLE Exam Questions Yr 2006 - 2010 recently.
#1. By EPH from Popular (White & Orange color).
#2. By Star Publishing (Purple with colourful numbers)

After comparing, realised quesitons are almost identical…however, the quality of the answers are miles apart. Pls don’t get one by Star Publishing…have already discovered 1 wrong answer.

Get EPH, it is definitely MUCH BETTER. The answers are explained in more details and in a little booklet…the other only has 2 pages with no explanation at all.

I have been reading this thread after over a month. Thank you to Zhou Shicai for the detailed analysis of the new Ammiel Wan books. I am sold!

Took my son to Popular just now.....got him to flip the PSP P6 - dunno if he really did look at the question, but he randomly looked at some and claim so-so. End up I din buy 😞 So sad, I was all ready to get another assessment book 😉 Looks like I'll wait a bit more before deciding.
