It could be part of the India - Singapore Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) - http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2010-09-25/news/27614513_1_ceca-comprehensive-economic-cooperation-agreement-mras

Wonder why MOE must bring them in. Their English is quite difficult to understand, and don't tell me there are not enough suitable locals for the teachers role?

Don't they attend lessons in NIE?

I found out that there's 2 categories of foreign teachers hired by MOE...
              - One group with teaching experience, based on their local country's Uni qualification, don't go through NIE training... 1 year contract + 2 years option for renewal subjected to the school.
              - Another younger group without teaching experience, based on top Uni qualification, will go through NIE training and bonded.

But I think MOE can only get the 1st group of foreigners... 2nd group sure look for better offer elsewhere...

Hi I am Dora, I have a girl in K1 this year. having been lurking around but haven’t been posting, until I saw this that post that I feel I must post.

I think if we have Indian teachers fr India to teach Tamil or Hindi, perfectly fine, or China teachers to teach Chinese. But I think for the rest of the subjects, its a no-no. As it is, Singaporeans already have serious identity crisis. What values are these teachers imparting to our kids? What is socially acceptable there may not be socially acceptable here. E.g. I have know so many Indians from India that are still stuck with the caste system, and it shows subtly or obviously in the things that they say and do. These things are deeply in grained in them, and its not something that can be changed just because they have gone thro NIE in SG. Children pick up these things far faster than the actual content of lessons. Its totally not the same as having them as Engineers or IT professionals.
Whatever new immigrants that come over should integrate into our society. I think before this new influx, we are already having some identity. Much as I don’t agree to the recent large influx of foreigners, I am still tolerable to having them in other jobs. But I would expect them to try to integrate into our society, our believes etc. NOT for them to come and change our next generation’s values and believes. At this rate, we will never become a nation with an identity.
Now its 2% foreigners, but I seriously feel that we should put a stop before it becomes 20%, like the influx of foreigners. In childcares, if they are privately run, the govt has no control. But in national schools, don’t tell me they have no control?!

When the students get to university they'll have to contend with even more foreign accents. I remember my lecturers had Indian accents, Sri Lankan accents, Pakistani accents, Irish accents, Scottish accents... Makes your lectures quite unforgettable. 😄

our local u are also facing similiar problem with foreign-accented English for quite some time already and I saw from a forum discussing this. One undergraduate complained that at times his PRC classmates ask/answer questions in Mandarin with the PRC lecturer and this poor guy thought he's attending a chinese lecture instead :stupid: :stupid: :stupid:

Yes, No offence to anyone but I remember I had a hard time trying to figure out what some of them are saying during the uni lectures.

Think for uni students, even though struggle to understand but still won't be so bad as for priimary school students. Primary school students' command of English may not be strong in the first place since they are so young so they may be further confused.
