Q&A - PSLE Math

Hi.jieheng. can I check with you another q.
Jane had 9/10m of ribbon. She used 4/5kg of it to tie 2 identical parcels
(a) how many cm of ribbons did jane use to tie 1 parcel.
(b) What fraction of ribbon was left?
Can use the same method as the last q?
The method I use is ( 9/10 x 4/5) / 2.
Thanks -

Yes , you can . (I assume there is no unit after 4/5 in the question ) -

a)
the length of ribbons that Jane used to tie 1 parcel = [(9/10)*(4/5)] / 2 = 9/25 m = (9/25)*100 = 36 cm (Ans)
b)
the original length of the ribbons = 9/10 m = 90 cm
the length of the ribbons that Jane used = 2*36 = 72 cm
the length of the ribbons that she left was = 90 - 72 = 18 cm
the fraction of ribbon was left = 18 / 90 = 1/5 (Ans) -
Thanks a lot , jieheng.

P5 qtn :
Vernice had $1196 more than Ethan. If Vernice were to give 1/7 of her money to Ethan, she would have 4 times as much as Ethan. How much money did Ethan have?
Thanks. -

E [---------------]
Vernice left 6/7 if she were to give 1/7 to Ethan , change [---------------] to [-------6u-----]
V [-------6u-----][-------6u-----][-------6u-----][-------6u-----]
E [-------6u-----]
6/7 ------> 24u , so 1/7 -----> 4u
V [-------6u-----][-------6u-----][-------6u-----][-------6u-----]
E [2u-][---4u---]
Transferred back 4u from E to V
V [-------6u-----][-------6u-----][-------6u-----][-------6u-----][---4u---] (28u)
E [2u-]
Vernice had $1196 more than Ethan ,
(28u - 2u) -----> 1196
26u -----> 1196
1u -----> 46
the amount of money that Ethan had = 2u = 2*46 = $92 (Ans) -
Hi Jieheng,
Thanks for the solution. A little confused as to why (--------) can change to (----6uā)??
Thanks. -

As Vernice left 6 / 7 , if we change [---------------] to [-------6u-----] or (any multiples of 6) , we are able to know how many units is (1/7) that Vernice gave to Ethan .Hi Jieheng,
Thanks for the solution. A little confused as to why (--------) can change to (----6u---)??
Thanks.
