Comparing Enrichment Programme versus Private Tutor

I agree with Mrs Wong. It really depends on the which home tutor and which centre you are comparing to as well as your child. 1-1 attention can never be bad. Home tutors tend to have a bad name because of certain irresponsible tutors who are out to earn a quick buck.
If you are looking for home tutors, find someone who is responsible and professional. When he comes for tuition, does he bring anything? How does he dress? (Jeans & Shoes or Shorts & Slippers?) Can he tell you what he intends to teach your child for the coming lesson?
My friends and I have been teaching for a few years now. While we’re not the best, we are pretty experienced. We take pride in our work and work hard with our students to achieve academic success. We set up guidelines for ourselves for different level and subjects and often meet up to discuss about our students and new teaching methods etc. -
It is important to identify what area he is weak in first.
From my experience, students who manage to attain 60+% for their English Language, they should have decent sentence structure. What is lacking are usually grammar consistency and vocabulary. This would penalise them in the composition as well as open ended comprehension.
One of the best way would be reading. I encourage all my students to read everyday. Newspapers should be a daily affair and one quality storybook a week should bring his grades to distinction, or at least close to. However, results will not be immediate. It will be a long enduring process. -

Can anyone kindly adv how much to engage a private tutor? My gal is in P1, we are looking at getting a tutor twice a week for her. She is easily distracted, group tuition or enrichment class would not help her…

It all voice down to your own child.
If your child is the attention seeking or those who cannot stay still for more than 5 minutes or those who are easily distracted, then individual tuition will be best. Else you may consider group tuition ( likely at homes ) or enrichment centre.
However, the teacher students ratio for enrichment centre is normally rather big either 1:10 or 1:20.
I have heard from some parents who sent their kids to this x-school teacher who specialise on Maths only. Her ratio is 1:4 or so and she is very skillful. Last year, there is this child who was P2 then, and the teacher feels that he is quite good and suggested coaching him on higher level. The mum agreed and that child scored full marks for SA2 last year and at that moment that teacher is already coaching that child materials of P3 level. The teacher is currently moving fast for him, coaching him P4 materials and preparing him for Gifted exam at no extra charge. Another parent who has a P6 child who is weak in problem sums and that teacher is guiding her more on word problems solving with model drawings . Her lessons are like 'Tailored to Measure' , depending on individual child .
She told me that the teacher charges $200 for every four lessons. If your child miss a lesson due to CCA or whatever reason, no fees will be deducted, which means your $200 will stretch for a longer period or you can arrange for makeup lesson. (Unlike enrichment centre, one will have to just forgo it, like my boy in Learning Lab - miss several lessons due to school matter.) Oh yes but one will need to pay $30 material fees which include assessment book, other school exam papers, etc.
My own boy is P6 Gifted program but I only put him in for English tuition at Learning Lab Gifted Program and another current school teacher ($400 for 4 lessons) for English Compo in my house. Feel that is rather expensive. But most enrichment centre does not cater for Gifted Program and I cant find any 'make to measure' tutor except one-to-one and Learning Lab.
Anyone knows of any specialise Good X-School English teacher or Current teacher offering 'tailor to measure' for English lesson and charging at reasonable price like the Maths teacher I mentioned. I am hoping to find one with small teacher-student ratio ( 1: 4 to 1:6) . Thanking you in advance.

my eldest son p6 has just changed his math tutor… actually its like a very risky choice because he had been with his current math tutor for 4 yrs already… started as home tuition for 2yrs or so n later she opened her own tuition centre n now she no longer teaches one to one, but 1 to 8… my son couldnt catch up with the others so i was searching for tutors until my friend recommeded her son’s tutor to me…
u know, being p6 n to change tutor all of a sudden was like a very diff decision to make as i’m afraid of any hiccups n my son wun get a 2nd chance in scoring well… so i tried out the new tutor recommended by my friend… this tutor told me that i shouldnt drop the current tutor, but to continue for both if i could afford it… she emphasize that she needs to build a rapport with the student and see if my son is used to her teaching or not, unlike when i approach other tuition centres, they always ask me to drop the old one so that i can commit more lessons with them…
my son is now still with the old tutor, together with the new tutor at a tuition centre, n i must say he is doing very well… for questions he dunno, he brings it to the new tutor where she teach him patiently… n on top of that, she speaks to my son about his activities to boost up his confidence level… after few mths now, i wanted to drop the old one but she still suggest not to, unless also agreed by my son, n tells me the pros and cons where i’m really impressed…
so if u r changing ur kid’s tutor, i would suggest that u ask them if they like the tutor or not… i used to think some so-called good tutors might not create "sparks" with everyone, not to say for ex or current teacher… other than they hv the up to date knowledge of the syllabus, i met 2 of them who are really impatient and just kept shouting… if shouting can help, i can just shout at my kids daily myself… -

Not considering the cost aspect, your current decision is a correct one. My DS also in P6, he is with JEI PSLE Math.
Learning ctr and tutor only can provide guide , short cut learning process, but to do well it will take more than that. Beside the ctr, I bought him top school papers to practice and recompute the JEI worksheets. My DS will do math everyday with me. It is a subject that require daily practice. -
Private Tuition is more effective:
Student learn more based on what he need more help in
Can ask more or any questions the student faced (Group: the stu may have little chance of asking) -
Either way, not important. Only students attitude is important. If a child attitude is couldn’t care less one, then he goes to enrichment or one to one also no use.
