Preparing kids for P5 in 2011
-
Hi mummies,
My hubby is forced to be a hands-on dad bcos he feels he can teach them Maths and can’t afford math tuition. I plan revision, buy assessment books and coach whatever I can…but he is still better in some areas of science. This forum also has helpful ladies giving me advice how to gear up. Very grateful.
If kids attend many tuition classes, I really wonder why they find time to finish school hw & tuition hw. Getting school hw done alone means no revision…very scary bcos it is insufficient. -

I have the same problem with my 3 kids in the past. Now, I have dedicated time for each of them. Weekday mornings for my DD2 as she is in afternoon session, weekday nights are for my Dd1. Sat morning for Ds and hopefully if all of them can finish their school work, we will go out later in the afternoon. Sundays mornings are for revision with DD1 since she needs help most. Initially, my Dd2 always wants my attention, since she is the youngest, but I ignore her or tell her straight to hold her questions till morning. Not easy to enforce as many circumstances can lead to changes but the big direction is this. :grphug:
Hey, it's comforting to hear that! So I should stress him nowkaka:
My Ds in Sec One is so relax now. He is able to cope better with the \"training\" he got from preparing his PSLE. My Dd in P5 is the the really stressed one, her homework took her so long, there is never time for revision. In fact she spent her whole day today just doing homework and nothing else, yet, she did not manage to finish ... to be continued tomorrow
I wonder how the children going to tuitions cope with school and tuition homework plus time to attend tuition?
what kind of training did you give your DS? Assume he had no tuition then? I'm still hanging on without tuition for them but sometime can be tough as dd1 will ask questions while I am coaching DS or dd2 will come asking for attention. Somehow the 3 of them will come to me at the same time even though my dh is a hands-on dad
I didnt really stress my DS too much when he was doing his PSLE, he is already very stressed by the school and the whole process. I know his limitations, so I push a bit, pull a bit, stay away a bit ... -
I set schedule for my p5 son and p1 daughter…both in morn session…morning I have peace and quiet to prepare work for day, surf net or prepare notes for son…but it is tough when both return at same time. Have to dedicate more time to p1 as she can’t do work on her own. If son has math hw, will hv to wait for hubby as I can’t help him at all. Constant struggle for time everyday.

Hey, we are in the same boat for both ds n dd1
Sometime I do wander if neighbourhood schools are good choice but I can see that he gets lots of exposuse that builds his confidence.
Well, just went to popular to buy 1 assessment book for maths, chinese n science. Can't really bring myself to ignore SA1. I glanced through the Challenging Maths and was :!: both dh n I took quite a while to complete some of the questions, even though both of us from technical background. -

Some neighbourhood schools have teachers who do care and go that extra mile than others in popular schools.
Maybe CA1 can ignore a little for 10%, but SA1 is 40% in some schools.
Although I try to control buying too many assessment, can't help when there is CA1, SA1 and SA2 in son's school. Those 3 alone means 3 new sets plus 1 more set for weekly revision. -
Last night, dd was busy working in the two "Picture Discussion" given by EL and CL teacher respectively. She had to type and print out the details that she observed from the picture as part of homework to submit on Monday.

This Teacher sounds like she is really good. It is the only way to make sure her kids get skills practice for oral in the detail. Else, she would need to sit down with every kid in turn and listen and give feedback. Also, in this way, she can give written feedback that can be referred to again later. What a clever strategy!! -
