If you are thinking of getting a second-hand or REALLY CHEAP piano for your child who is starting to learn Piano, please think twice!
Your child is not just learning how to play the piano. He is learning music. Especially for young children, you would like them to develop a good ear (pitching). If the piano that he is practicing on is not tuned correctly, he is learning all the wrong pitches! And the keys in some old pianos may all sound lower/higher by a few notes.
Electronic Keyboards may be economical to begin with, but unless you do not think there is a need to develop perfect pitching, it is important that you get a good PIANO - a relatively new one at least so you can still get a technician to tune it.
Music courses do not come cheap in the first place - 20k to 30k on school fees alone, not to mention all the exams and material fees. It is also a long-term commitment. So if you are serious about letting you child learn music, it is still worth getting a good Piano! -

Btw how old is your girl? My girl who is 6th this August also recently expressed interest in learning piano, so i sent her for 1 to 1 learning at Cristofori Music Sch. We was thinking of the electronic keyboard too but we change our mind when we saw the Little Mozart & Beethoven Piano. Y dont you go and take a look if your kids r around my kids age?Hi all

Upright piano also comes in different height, 121, 132 cm etc. There is also another type of upright, they call it upright grand. It has the same area of the grand piano but build upright for those who have space constraints. And a few more techinical things I was told but I forget what is it.
I used to have a 121 lower grade upright. As my girl goes higher grade, she finds it irritating because it cannot allow her to control her playing, loud, soft, strong. The piano tone is like mono, hollow and noisy. After changing to a better grade upright, the piano allows her to express well. Me who knows nothing about music, can hear the difference. -
Mine is either 132 or 131. Can't check in the office now. :oops:
After the piano has been delivered, the tuner did the tuning, DS, happily tried his new toy. He played an easy piece than told me that something is not right with the piano or the piano is not tune properly. Keep on pressing a note and asked me to hear the defect.
I was quite upset when he said that. There I part with my hard earned money, the piano just delivered and he was not satisfied. Took a deep breathe and try to concentrate what he was not happy about. True enough there was an after effect of a very very slight vibration sound. Very tiny like sound of a metal vibrate against another metal.
The only metal piece on the piano is the notes holder. I check on that and true enough, this very fussy son of mine has placed a metal pointer on the hinge on the notes holder. :heresmyfish:
He has just started his lesson in April. Not even a grade one. I wonder how much more I need to invest when he reach higher grade. :faint: -

Talk about invest, I roughly make a calculation for myself, estimate lah hor ... hmmm ... I have spent about $40K since she started 8 years ago. Piano lessons, 1st piano then change to 2nd current piano, exams, books ... -

By the way, I don't have a 132 upright. I bought a mid range 121. If not fussy, can last up to grade 8 which I highly doubt so given his fussiness. Secondly, I don't dare to hope he will continue up to that level. But I do promise him, if he ever reach up to grade 8, I'll buy a baby grand. Of course the cheapest range
Is your daughter with private piano teacher since grade 1? Or did she switch from school to private lesson? -
Hi EN, she started with Yamaha JMC for 6 months. Then change to Christoferi for one to one, I think about 2 years or so. Then get a teacher to teach from home. Recently just change teacher, goes to her house.
