my friend's DS is taking PIPA at his primary school and the father went down to DHS and HC, they told him he can try DSA as long as the school result above 80% (overall). and what he told me is no need to sit for any academic test which i am very surprised . will know more next month because the DSA selection will start very soon.

I think it says on last year's DHS' DSA webpage that if below 80% average, then need to take GAT. Above, no need to take GAT. And if I didn't read wrongly, it says if above Grade 5 in the instrument, no need audition?

I was told audition is MUST regardless what grade you are.

I was told audition is MUST regardless what grade you are.[/quote]Perhaps. But I read and re-read the DSA webpage many times last year to ascertain, and if I'm not mistaken, it was different from the year before too. We'll just have to see what criteria they have for this year then.

HCI usually need to do gAT plus several subject tests. You sure no need to do? But the DSA website never says anything about CO DSA.

Does your ds take chinese instrumental exam? Maybe I should get my dd to pick up her violin again! She dropped it after she picked up pipa. Not that she wanted to drop, but she wasn't too keen on practising violin and I din want to waste money and time on both instruments. Maybe at least get her back playing leisurely...?

yes, Nothing about CO at DSA website, my friend went to the HCI and DHS personally to ask. I was very surprised when he told me no test have to be done. hope he interpreted the msg correctly. :shock:

Hi, need experienced parents advice


My dd joined CO for a year. However, the external teacher her school enaged for them was not teaching well in my opinion. So I've withdrawn her from CO and engaged a music teacher for my dd to learn privately instead.

Can my dd still apply for DSA using that CO instrument at P6 even though she wasn't in CO? ie. prepared to join Sec Sch CO if admitted via DSA

If she can play means can play right? Is ABRSM cert sufficient proof?
Or she must be physically in primary school CO in order to apply for DSA?

Alternatively, should she re-join CO at P5 just to clock partcipation in SYF? Is it necessary?

She is P3 this year. Thanks for your advice! It starts me thinking that I shd perhaps encourage her to go for competition next year (it's biennial right?). But my dd, hor, a bit scaredy cat, so dunno whether she'll be ok?

I'm sure he'll be successful in his DSA! Is Grade 9 the max grade for NAFA/CCM? My dd tchr said it's possible for her to finish grade 9 (max b4 diploma for NUS/CFA) by P6, so we'll see how lah. Do share with us your ds experience in DSA and other stories u may hear!!

Oh, p3, can, can join competition next year and in p6, but in p6, it would be after psle, so joining the competition would not be for DSA already, but for personal satisfaction. haha. Yes, ds is not too bad, and yes, grade 9 is the highest grade, and then there's diploma(grade 10).

Chinese instrument would not be ABRSM. Students generally do exams of either of these 3 examining boards:
- CCM (Central Conservatory of Music - Beijing), organised by NAFA
- Shanghai Conservatory of Music - organised by Shuang Ying
- NUS
The most internationally recognised exam is that of CCM.

Yes, your child can learn on his/her own, but of course to have CCA experience is useful. You'll get the teacher's testimonial too.

Question about the National Competition: how can I find out the standards? I only know my own child playing Zhongruan, no idea her calibre? Anyway the next round in 2014, right?

The only way you can find out is by going to view the competition yourself, as you've found out. ;D
