Science Guide Books

Introducing Science at P2 would be cruel. Regarding the pathetic textbooks, there is nothing we can do but invest in good guide books to coach and teach.
I am wondering why did MOE introduce Science @ P3 only and they allocate so little time (4 periods of 30 minutes each) :? And the pathetic textbooks....:stupid: ...Especially now nearing the SA1, the teacher seems like rushing thru the topics and just dish out h/w for kids to do at homeChampion:

Cycles & Systems not a tough topics compared to Interaction.
Interaction (involving magnets, properties) is not easy...better taught at P4, like what you mentioned, P3s just started with Science this year.
..
Teachers in school teach just basic Science, not even good enough to pass exams. If want our kids to score, have to download past year papers to exposure them to different styles of questions and teach them KEYWORDS.
Hubby & I complement each other...he has no interest in 'wordy' stuff like cycles and systems but does a good job with magnets and electricity.[/quote]Hi Janet and Champion,
My take will be if MOE wants to introduce science at P2, they can use the whole year to touch on Diversity (without materials). Classification and living things in my opinion is like general knowledge.
Hi Janet,
Is Interactions difficult? We skim through notes on Janet Sim's Interaction book and looks like mainly covers magnets. To my child, he prefers such science than wordy stuff like materials (needing to know what materials is natural or man-made, knowing some animals'/plants characteristics for classification purpose etc), so I feel that next year will be tough on us with Cycles and Systems being wordy stuff. -

Just feel that @ P3 - with so limited periods per week, it is so hectic and rush for the kid to learn and memorize so many KEYWORDS.
For my DD1, she loves the topics on Animals and Plants (for now) - think probably due to encouragement from her tutor to read and explore from the books and internet...But she can be quite lazy at times and choose the easier way - \"Ask Mummy lor\" or \"Ask Mummy to read & check up the Ultimate Science Guide!\" :stupid:...Think for lazy bump like her, the best way is to get her to memorise the facts

I have not got my boy to memorise facts yet. The only 'fact' that need to memorise so far is characteristics of living things. So far he can manage the past year papers without memorizing facts. Will need him to familiarise with which type of flowers grow singly/clusters though. His performance in section B is less than ideal because while he knows the concept, he is not answering to the questions. In laymen's term:
Q: what did you eat for lunch?
A: My mother prepares ham and egg sandwiches for lunch.
You get what I mean. -
Interactions topic is all about magnets at P4. Boys will like it. Section B which is OE kind of questions is a killer bcos teachers are looking for keywords...if no keyword, even writing a paragraph can still get wrong.
My son likes the interaction topic...he has difficulty wif 'cells'. I can't remember the functions too

Yes, janet_lee88.. agree with that. They are looking for only the
proper scientific jargon / scientific term only. Had to tell my DD1
last year.. what's up with all the grandmother story in her answer.
She
.. and this year teacher super hotz and i see keywords
everywhere. I just zoom in on the memorization of characteristics
and all those properties stuff.. for my this girl got whatcha call it...
short term memory thing. Thankfully, interactions content
is brief. -

Told my son same thing too...spare me your grandmother story and give me the KEYWORD !!! No keyword write essay also zero mark.Yes, janet_lee88.. agree with that. They are looking for only the

Actually interactions content in textbook is brief but it's not. Questions on Maglev train appear often. -
Hello All and Happy Holiday...... :dancing:
Janet,
I have got the P3 Science Explorer :rahrah: - the same dear colleague who got me the Ultimate Science Guide went Popular during Lunch yesterday and helped me get it :hugs: When she was there, she called me,\"Hey, u sure u want this? I am looking at the sample - it is not a book leh; something like a set of A4 exam papers compiled together and it costs $10++!\"
...Told her that should be the one and so she got it for me
Have not opened and read the materials yet as came home late from work yesterday nite and now still lying on bed while typing this post :snooze: -
Champion:
Bought the Science Explorer P3 & 4 too. Some of the questions can be too difficult, so don't kill the child's interest. BTW, I saw a compilation of 'misconceptions' for Lower & Upper block by same writer (Tan Li Ling) but don't find it useful...just in case you are tempted to get.Hello All and Happy Holiday...... :dancing:

Hi Janet,
Thanks for the info; DD1 gets interested when she sees the Science Explorer and starts doing it voluntarily! :rahrah: ....At least no need to \"negotiate\" and both of us are happy doing the work & enjoy the bonding time :celebrate: -

Went to IMM after picking daughter yesterday...felt uneasy not going to Popular (in case have good deals)...so itchy legs walked me therejanet_lee88:
