I am not sure how \"in line\" Kumon is compared to the Spore syllabus. I am assuming it is not since Kumon has always pride themselvess on their special worksheets.


My kids did Kumon Chinese when we were living in Taiwan. That must be one of their most dreaded period of their lives! LOL (even tho we were there just once a week. there were kids who went daily). Till now, the kids still make jokes whenever they see any Kumon ctrs here. \"Come on, Kumon ...\" .

The good thing that I learnt from Kumon was to use a timer for ds (to focus). I did the same for him when he was younger. With timer set for 15-20mins each time, he could finish his hw with less distraction.

I must say some of the Chinese comprehension were \"nice to read\" but it got harder and the repetition also became a turn-off after awhile. (I am not sure of it is done the same way too here... ie. need to repeat the same worksheets 2-3 times) We stopped eventually when elder dd got to E or F. Can't remember which level ds stopped at. No regrets.

Sandunes, thanks for your contribution too... I didn't like the Chinese program either so I never signed DS up. I didn't think languages and math could be taught the same way.

If he had time, I would do everything but he doesn't so we need to focus. Can anyone advise whether Kumon is at all helpful in PSLE prep? Or is he better off doing problems that are more in line with PSLE paper? Please help. I am quite confused.

I don't think Kumon is in line with PSLE prep le. As you're probably well aware too - we talked about unitary method in another thread :lol:

I withdrawn my dd when she was done with level F. Kumon worksheets are pretty straight forward in my opinion. Enough foundation for her la, might as well spend her time on more mind blogging heuristic sums

I SIL kids are still doing Kumon Maths & they are already in Secondary ... they like the challenge and they are the one requesting for it ... Her little boy whom took PSLE last yr scored A* in Maths and he picked up algebra from Kumon .... I guess there are some merits in every programme ... just sharing.

Thanks Suz855, thanks for your input. Yes... Levels G and H are algebra. After discussion with hubby, we've compromised. We will let him go up to H and then stop before the PSLE.

2.5 yrs old. they started with drawing and tracing…how to hold a pencil. I did not sit in the class (even the initial first few).


I enrolled them in maths. Quite impressed now on the way they do worksheet.

Started from lowest level 7A. Basically tracing exercises. On hindsight, it would be much 'cheaper' to buy some books to practice tracing at home

To me, Math and Science are creative subjects so worksheet based learning is inappropriate and boring. It leads children to develop phobia in Math/Science. I have frens whose childen hates math after all these worksheets drilling. Math and Science are very related to our practical life. In fact, we can teach children math and science anywhere...in the supermarkets/swimming pool/park - get your child to add/subtract/multiply/divide etc while you are doing your grocery shopping/eating/playing/ etc. Science is about discovery, exploratory and hands on.....while in the kitchen...etc.... This way, your child learns better as it is done in a fun and enjoyable way......

My younger child witnessed her sister doing piles of kumon worksheets for years. She is totally resistant to the kumon way of learning. So I sent her to abacus instead. What she doesn't realise is, abacus has tonnes of sums to do too :lol:

Regardless of methods, whichever suits the child, as long as there is early exposure, child should do reasonable well in Maths

hi sleepy, so yr 2 girls - one Kumon mtd, the other CMA mental maths mtd. Which one you think better, in the long run ? Are yr two girls in Primary school now ?
