Preparing kids for P5 in 2011

Personally, I didn't bat an eyelid when my kids scored at the bottom of their classes in P1 and P2. In P5 and P6, I WILL NOT let that happen..

My no.3 never scored at the bottom of his class but is doing so now in p5 & p6. Can I say that I will NOT let that happen? How can I stop it from happening, I wonder. Wishful thinking, that's all I can say. Some things just happen. Makes me wish I'd stopped at 2 kids.

My son has never been a top scorer...but now he is doing badly...flunked EL & CL mock papers :rant: Science & CL just border line passing for mock as well. This weekend is packed and stressful but what choice do I have ? Can only console him and myself that it's just 2 more weeks to go.

Give yourself and DS a hug ! I know he must be feeling bad that he failed the mock papers but encourage him that he will do better and probably those mock papers are set a higher standard :roll:

Actually they were not mock papers but from last year 2010. Science at P5 is getting tougher. This morn, son did 'Water Cycle' in Helen Lee's assessment book and I almost fainted marking it...:faint: but it was a good 'workout' for both of us.

Understand your concerns and know that you are doing your best for DS :celebrate: ....In fact, I am also like you - when I went thru DD1's work on those past year papers or assessment books, I got flare up easily when I spotted careless mistakes or maybe tough questions but she did not even take the effort to attempt to them! Especially for Science - when I ran thru all the top schools' papers, I realise,\" :!: how come questions can be set in such a way??\" That's when I started to panic & went reading up the guide books and even google for the correct answers. :roll:

Hi teh_oh,

This torture will continue for another 3 weeks...son finishes his SA1 on 13th May, but daughter's assessment finishes 19th May. :?: Whatever it is, I can't wait for June holidays...badly need that 1 month break.

Today has been tough...no choice bcos time is so tight and next week will be impossible to do anything.

actually it doesn’t stop after the exams. Best to use the holidays to really get the child up to speed on the weak areas. Holidays are a godsend. No homework, no school, no CCA, lots of time to focus on the weak subjects. When school starts, it’s fire fighting again.

well, the good news is that boys generally mature later than girls. Science and Maths are the boys strong subjects, while languages are their weak areas. When they go into secondary school, they will do much better, it's the time when they're mature in their thinking and gets more motivated. That's what I was told. At least that's what keeps me sleeping soundly at night.

Sorry to burst your little dream, but my ds2 is poor in math & science! And not much better in languages. ;( My eldest is actually very good in her math & sciences and became even better in them in secondary school. Elder boy too.

Learning cannot stop during the holidays...holidays is the BEST time to revise the weak areas...the idea that holidays mean taking a break from school work cannot work. Imagine a month of relaxation and going back to school in Term 3 and the brain cannot gear up.
