There is a training course to be held on 18 May 6 - 9 pm at Pathlight School Ang Mo Kio which will give you an idea if you should send your kid to mainstream school.

Do look out for their other training course as well.

thanks for the information Princess Belle. I have been looking for information and options relating to school placement and this has come at the right time. will try to find out more.

DS is 5YO (born in 06) , he has difficulties grasping a pencil tightly and doing it the correct way. Another is he is ‘afraid’ of jumping, running down stairs. till nw he is going slowly super slowly n carefully. can anyone advise? is he just afraid or it has something else to do with it?

It is difficult to judge like this. Could be just motor skill issues or a psychological hurdle to overcome, you need to observe other aspects such as social awareness, interactions with peers & adults, cognitive abilities, verbal and non verbal communications abilities etc. If there is any amiss felt, consult a paed/psychologist.

I think most PDs who are unfamiliar with special needs, may miss signs of sensory integration disorder.

- can draw and copy a cross (one vertical and one horizontal intersecting lines)
- folds paper in half, making sure the edges meet
(Many kids with perceptual-motor problems have difficulties with symmetry and bilateral control of hands. Many will have learning difficulties.)

If you find that your child has difficulties in more than 30% of 2 or more subdomains, print out the checklist and complete it. Show it to your PD and have him refer your child to an Occupational Therapist (OT) in hospital.

I guess one of the main differences is social intent.

Eg very young kids with speech AND developmental delays (age below 3) play in similar manner. They may like to bang or throw things repeatedly when they are left unattended. A child with GDD will tend to reciprocate when given adult attention (adult-led play). A child with ASD will tend to prefer banging as he enjoys the sensory stimulation from banging.

Both kids are likely to have some form of sensory processing difficulties.

Children with special needs tend to have difficulties adjusting to change, so they may appear "stubborn".


With older kids, it’s a bit easier to tell the differences.

Just something to share: My son was diagnosed with ASD last year. We had no prior family history(from both sides) with children or any1 with this disorder. Relatives who do not understand looked at him in a ver different way. Could not follow all the instructions in the Childcare Centre that he attend. I was really upset and did not know how to cope at time. He throw tantrums also. Doctor refer him for therapy sessions and he was eventually referred to EIPIC at THK this February. Condition did not improve drastically. Until 3 months back, my SIL’s friend recommended me to try out on Essential oil, and after 3 months , we (myself, SIL, BIL, and even my mum who is taking care of him) feels that his communication skills improve a lot. He is able to sit still for a longer period of time. This makes me certain that his condition can further improve if i persist.

I came across some recommended protocol for GDD as well. Any1 who is interested to try, can PM me. I can get my SIL to share more as she had been using the product for a longer period of time. Just to clarify, I am not earning anything. Its purely sharing.

Both my boys only started to converse with me properly from age 4 yrs plus. Nowadays, my ear drums always feel like exploding whenever the brothers are playing excitedly with each other.

I shall respond to this because it gives me hope since my boy now at 3.5 yo at best can say \"I want water\", \"I want milk\", \"I want raisins\", \"Bye! See you tomorrow!\". And that is after we force him to say what he wants instead of just whining and pointing! Yes, can call \"mummy\" and \"daddy\" and \"aunty\" (my maid) when he wants to but not often. :idea:

Other areas of development seems fine and he can understand what we are saying and his teachers also commented he is quite intelligent. But lose out compared to his Nursery peers for sure just because he is not yet verbal! He is trying very hard to say something but we don't understand him. He is also singing and can follow songs well but cannot pronounced the words accurately.

If I allow myself to worry I would be really sick by now!

I have the 4 yo time-line in mind as well so lets hope there will really be a break-through and one fine day my boy can start to converse with me!

I find that your boy is quite similiar to my boy condition.
My boy so far is diagonised with speech delay . He is able to say some single words the rest is like babbling not clear. 2-3 mth ago he started to imitates a lot single words and Im currently been working with him at home too.
and he is seeing speech therapist as well.

He will be coming to 3 years old in another 4 mths. I really wanted to give him a few more mths hopefully he will catch up his peers in term of speech but my hubby feel that shld send him EIPIC centre asap.

I thought of give him abit more time hopefully can converse with us or shld I send him straight to EIPIC centre.
Feeling so confused don't if Im making the right decision.
