Petition to Review the Singapore Education System

I hope we can find someone in the ministry who TRULY understands the pressure our children are going through in primary school…the tough(er) standards from P5 and time being so tight trying to grasp the concepts for Maths. The difficulty can be felt when son started P5 at the beginning of the year.


Our children attend government schools. If this is the case, why must we parents scramble to find tutors/enrichment centres to coach our kids ? Isn’t this the responsibility of the school teachers ? To make sure the children understand what is being taught in school ? But in a classroom of 40, how can he/she possibly pay attention to all of them ? It is possible to have a maximum of 30 pupils at P1 and P2, why can’t this continue all the way to P6 ? Why is the class increased to 40 from P3 onwards ? Science is introduced at Primary 3 and it’s not an easy subject to handle.

Sorry for all the ranting but I am really upset and stressed.

I had a discussion with a Chinese teacher from a Tuition Center recently. She's from China and she's married a Singaporean and has been living in Singapore for quite some time now. She has a daughter in Primary school, so she's familiar with the Singapore education system.

She shared with me the China education system. It seems that in China, the children attends full day school. The teachers are specialized in the subjects they teach, ie. they don't teach multiple subjects like our teachers do so here. I would assume that with teaching the same subject for a number of years, they would be considered domain experts. The teachers are also more responsible, in the sense that they will teach till all the students in the class understand the concepts. They have enough time to do that, I guess, since it is a full day school. In contrast, our schools rushes through the syllabus, and have exam questions that tests concepts that are not even introduced in the class. She feels that students in China have a much better foundation than Singapore students.

Our teachers are jack of all trades. They're not specialists and they try to cope as much as they can, teaching 3 subjects (Science, Maths, English) in half a day, with PE and other non academic subjects thrown in, competing for time with the academic subjects. It is no wonder we're where we are now.

We pride ourselves in our education, I think the credit should go to the parents and the tuition agencies.

Well, with the elections over, and the top man has said that they will listen more to the people and take suggestions from them. We'll see if they walk the talk.

oh yes, there is a need for change. err. I just don't know how to put my name in. I can't seem to find a place to click and register my name. :?

We can look at the education systems around us in the region, China, Hong Kong, India. Students from these regions are well known for their Maths (India, China), Science (China), English (India) abilities, multi lingual (Hong Kong, India). Further abroad, we can look into the western education system for ideas as well.
The culture in the Asian region is pretty similar to us, so we will most likely find something we can adapt straight away. The Western education system, we can look at it and most likely will have to change aspects of it to fit it into our culture.

Wait a bit...[/quote]I would suggests putting in a target number you want to achieve, and the actions you will be taking once the target has been achieved, so people will know the road forward.
