Please don't hate me for saying this. I dun like GY. He has the ear of LHL and it is his influence that gave us the IRs, even though people like Lim Boon Heng objected. People that look nice, may not BE nice...

      Nope, don't hate you.

hypergatak, I also only realised after digging around and reading up. I guess his argument is the job generation factor..and so the debate goes on.

I think it is really good this thread is starting to show up more different perspectives on both sides of the 'stories'. Future elections will likely be more challenging and it is good to have a relatively clear idea of some history of the debate issues..

But people like LKY didn't look nice, yet he did so much for Singapore. He is old and out of touch, I agree... but he did a lot for Singapore.
Can't agree more. Got this feeling that the new MP for Potong Pasir, is also not a very nice guy beneath his 嬉皮笑脸, really feel sad for Potong Pasir residents to have lost CST.

I believe the loss of PP hits CST harder than the loss in B-TP, 27 years of relationship is not trivial.

The purpose of the IRs are more than just gambling and job generation alone. It’s also to promote tourism in Spore. Unlike our neighbouring countries, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia (Bali, Lombok), Spore is not well known for its beaches and exotic appeal. Most of these tourists feel that there is not much to see in Spore, and tend to see Spore as a transit stopover - before going to the rest of the East. But with Thailand, Vietnam et al, tourists tend to spend a longer duration of time (as little as 4-5 days to 2 weeks or even a month) touring and enjoying these places.

With the IRs, the aim is to get tourists stay a longer period here to enjoy the sights and attractions, and subsequently spend their tourist dollar here. So, if you look at the IRs, it’s not just gambling alone. With RWS, there’s USS and with MBS, you have the Art and Science Museum and coming soon, the Gardens by the Bay which is close to MBS.

The idea is to make the IRs as holistic as possible, so that there is something for everyone. And that is good for Spore because we also depend on tourism (a tertiary industry) as a key growth factor.

So, in the past, tourists tend to stay in Spore for 1-2 days, but with so many activities and attractions going on, the aim is to entice them to stay here for 4-5 days before they fly to other Asian/Asean destinations. Spore needs to earn the toursim $$.

Talk about passion, where is the example set? 😉
There may be 1 example.. but no, not in the white camp.

one good example is CSM. How many millions can he earn elsewhere but he choose to be in an Opp camp fighting for fellow countryman.

Common sense action must need extraordinary effort. Why can't the procedure be that if the person have no other means to pay to use more of the Medisave? Why can't hospital just offer installment payment when patient really cannot pay?
Waiting for White camp supporters to come in and defend the MIW..

                  Anyone?

not related to any white... red... blue... black.... camp. 😉 Just need some clarification myself.

I thought installment payment plans are available? Thot I read in the newspapers that the hospitals do make that provision with some patients. Is this across the board or only a case-by-case? :?
In that case the biggest failure is our education system... We are not producing the right calibre people to meet the demands of the real world, isn't it? And yet these poor kids do suffer severe stress in the education. Something is so wrong....suffer without results.

Blame ourselves. Because we parents have precious few kids, we pave the way for them from the day they were born. They never had to struggle much for anything. Exam stress, yes, but to really work for something they want or need. Very few need to do that.
I have a feeling that the severe stress that kids face today is a more recent phenomenon. These kids are the present schooling lot, we haven't seen them in the workforce. The ones in the workforce today still belong to the spoon-fed era. There is hope yet!
