Preparing For O-Levels
-
Hi, just thought i will provide a quick update. Thanks for all the replies made. My son is in Sec 4 this year, and he did reasonably ok for his Sec 3 FY last year. (A1 for E.Maths, A2 for A.Maths, Physics, and Chemistry). The improvement has been very significant, considering his grades in MY. Really appreciated your remarks.

Badly as in D7 for both Maths, F9 for Physics, D7 for Chemistry.Badly, as in how badly?

I am still not sure why, but maybe he didn't quite know how to handle his upper sec work at the beginning. Maybe some other distractions too...Results across the board should not & will not suddenly free fall.

I managed to get his a tutor as recommended by one of the parents here, and I agree that it made a big difference. I think my DS needs someone whom he can relate to, who had been through our academic system and did well.
My son also did badly when he was in sec2. And the best decision I ever made was to hire tutors for him. After that, his attitude toward learning is more serious because he knows that I have to spend more for him. His O level result was excellent especially in Math. He credits his success toward the tutors. Now, he is in Poly and very motivated with his study.
Finding a good tutor is also very difficult. I would recommend full-time tutor, not part-time. And you need to monitor tutors as well, speak to them, ask this and that. If the tutors knows that you are watching their works, they would be more devoted.
I have hired part-time tutors before, but they were very disappointing. They have forgotten most of their work, and are not so dedicated.
Full-time tutors more $$, but in this day and time, it's worth it.CoffeeCat:
It is definitely a plus if you can find someone who can teach all 4 subjects but the chances is not very high. It might be better to find tutors who specialize as they have more confidence and competence (relatively) in their subject of choice.

not too early at all!!
get a tutor now!
think u might need two tutors.maggielhy:
Appreciated the contacts given. To find a tutor who can teach one subject properly is difficult, but this full-time tutor you have mentioned can teach all four subjects very well.
I know of a full-time tutor who specialises in all 4 subjects. I don't suppose he will mind circulating his contact number. But I am not exactly sure if he is still available.
Can try calling 8368-2533.twilight:
My niece jumped from 50 points in Prelims to 15 points in O's last year. So it's definitely possible like u said.Yeah one of my teachers said when she was in secondary, at the end of sec 3, her L1R5 was 43. So she knew she had to buck up and by prelim 2, it became 20+ and O level 13. So it's possible to lower your L1R5 within a year, provided you're willing to work hard.

Well its better to invest in the child education now then spent more in latter years.
Fo eg if child do not get into local uni, parents need to fork out more than $30k for private uni or $50-100k for overseas u. -
Hi,my girl is currently in her Sec 3 and she takes HCL. She will be sitting for her O Level Chinese Language exam this coming November. As her grades in sch test/CA are arnd a B3 standard, I'm desperately in search of a good tutor who can help her to push her grade to A2 or better still an A1. Do let me know if anyone has a gd recommendation.

Hi Starr, you can always refer to tuition agencies which have tried and tested tutors. Don't only base your judgement on the recommendation of the agency. You can interview the tutor to find out more about his/her teaching style and experience. -
ya me too i did badly for these sub

Understand where u r coming from. Those who got A grades for Chinese probably need not spend more time taking at end of year. And have more time for other subjects -
AceTutors, I did tried several tuition agencies and interviewed some they recommended. Much to my dismay, the tutors i interviewed either didn’t show much confidence when asked if they cld help bring my girl’s grade up 1 level, and worst, some cldn’t even tell me the marks weightage of each components in the "O" level exam paper. My girl currently have a English tutor who is committed and responsible. She is able to explain her formula in teaching and apart from working on the 10yrs series with my girl, she must be able to teach exam skill/techniques. But too bad, she doesnt teach Chinese. Unlike other subjects, I really find it a challenge to find a good tutor who can really teach to excel in Chinese.

I need a english tutor of O level,any recommendations?

Hi prettycure, its a bit late in the year for last minute O level English tuition. Most good tutors would have already packed their schedule. If you would like to try group tuition, i can recommend KRTC at Simei Eastpoint Mall. I sent my nephew there last year and the teacher managed to help pull up his grades so we were quite happy. Not sure if her classes are full now though.

Its time to start preparing O level now. Just few more months
