I gave my son 2 days of complete play-time after his exams...until he is bored...reverse psychology

Good idea! think i will adopt this method too. Provided if MINE will get bored too πŸ™‚

Actually I told him I'll give him a week off, but after 2 days, he told me SA1 results coming back soon and I saw his worried look. So I told him to get some work done since he should know why. If he wants to continue play, by all means but bear the consequences himself. Actually, no amt of play is enough for him but there must be a time for everything and he's no longer in lower primary.
I need to start him on tougher assessment books esp for compre.
I don't know if tougher assessment book is the answer for scoring in comprehension. My child completed 3 books on comprehension, and I feel that he is still at square 1. I don't see any improvement in his comprehension skills. I'm still looking for an effective way to teach comprehension.

For comprehension and other subjects, in my opinion, whats impt is the exposure on the type of questions set, be it tough or easy passage…

            1. Challenging Comprehension, Lynette Wan, by EPH
            2. Comprehension Strategies, Learners Publishing
            3. Excel in Comprehension, Suzi Salleh, EPH

sigh.. didn't do my kid any good. Wish they have books to guide you on the strategies. Comprehension Strategies have done that, but didn't seem to work. Might work for though.

I kinda agree with that. For Maths, I can easily get assessment books to drill 20-30 questions on a particular type. For English, at most they give you 2 comprehension passages on a particular type, or it's a very broad based classification, ie. non fiction, fiction, reports. I guess for languages, the boundaries are not so clear, too many types, unlike Maths.

Son's SA1 OE passage was taken from Readers Digest. This June, I'm going to get him to read them, highlight the words he doesn't understand and check them out. For comprehension cloze, I'll be starting him on P6 PSLE Comprehension assessment which I just bought (Learners). A friend of mine whose son is in P6 this year told me English will get very tough...I'm feeling it already, not just for Eng but for all the subjects. 😒 :frustrated:

                  Hello,

TGIF :imcool: :dancing: :boogie: but I am on medical leave today  . Guess due to the super  weather, have been hit by very bad migraine since yesterday nite :slapshead: .

DD1 got her EL result for paper 2 and \"as expected\" - lost marks in the Comprehension portion 😒 . She said EL T \"disappointed\" with e class performance as only 2 gets Band 1, majority band 2 & 5 in band 3. DD1 felt the hit and was very :gloomy: yesterday. Told her wait till I see the paper next week only during the PTM, then I will be able to gauge the standard & help her from there πŸ†’ .

Guess I have to work with DD1 on the Compre part this June holiday lioa. Anyone has recommendation for Comprehension assessment books?

                  :thankyou: In Advance πŸ˜„

I need to work on son's comprehension OE too. Comprehension cloze a little difficult though, but still have to practice...using Casco. Just bought 'Success in Comprehension' by Marshall Cavendish.

Yes, "OE questions" and "fill in the blank" is always the section that cause student to loose marks.

Usually dd can score about 11 -12 marks on the "fill in the blank" but this round she said the section of this SA1 paper was more tough and she only managed to get 8 marks out of 15 marks.

                        Hi Champion...

I got bad migraine when I saw her math paper..... My dd got 94 for prctice paper and 70 for SA1... My Hubby simply aksed me is that marks is for MY math ability  I was chanting and preeching her all the time..... I think the way I teach/presenting is not good....

Anyway I am using \"Comprehension strategies by learners\" not bad it has 3 types of questions 1st learning 2nd to practice 3rd trying it out. And some notes on how to do. I finished conquer....with her
