    Preparing kids for P5 in 2011

      When i get to read this forum, I realised I am not alone after all... I must agree that P4 to P5 is a big big jump. Seeing DD putting in a lot of effort to do well in her SA1 and yet not getting her 'ideal' marks make me feel that P5 is not easy at all.


      However to comfort her, I tell her that we still have another year to put in double efforts to do well for PSLE. She felt very demoralized and told me that she may not be able to get in to her dream school (with PSLE score of 260???)

      But I must say that Maths & Science are really the subjects that you either can do fantastically well or it will kill you... I am telling my DD that probably she should redo the school papers so as to \"Practice Makes Perfect\"? Hopefully, over time she can grasp the concept and methods to tackle the super difficult maths questions! As for Science, we shall do the same too, try to expose to more different kinds of questions...

      Sad to say... I really pity all the kids now.... :roll:

        ha ha ha, cheers cwc, glad i'm not alone šŸ˜‰ and i don't like to show him that the questions are killing me otherwise he'll say \"see, even my mummy cannot do/don't like to do\" this is not good for him at all. I really pity him sometimes but yet cannot show it šŸ˜‰ sigh.

          well, i must say i used to be very good & like maths when i was little but after looking thru ds p5 sa1 paper, i don't even feel like reading it šŸ˜‰ Trying to understand the questions already give me headache šŸ˜‰ Same goes to Science šŸ˜‰

          Although I am still intrigued enough to attempt some of the questions he doesn't know, or rather - out of no choice (otherwise who is going to help him? can't ask T so many questions right?), I am also beginning to have cold feet whenever Maths exam papers are released .. So nowadays, before scolding him for zero marks, I make sure I KNOW :idea: how to do. But most of the time, I ended up :nosebleed: first 😢

            For maths, I can still attempt (but take a long time).....so kids still convinced I am better. For science, I straightaway give disclaimer.

            I remembered posting somewhere claiming I intend to buck up and do some of the unfinished assessment myself......never did complete 3 pages....sigh. šŸ˜“

            and a lot of time, cannot scold first.....cos' I also cannot answer :oops:

              Hi, dd is in P6 and the following are just my 2 cents thought:


              For EL and CL language, there is not much different between P5 and P6 but take note of EL and CL compo. as this need times to build up the skill.

              For Maths, there will be three new topics added, circle, speed and algebra and the other topcis like ratio, fraction and percentage etc are some extension from P5.

              For Science, there will be some new topics/concepts to learn like force, engery , adaptations, environment etc but still managable.


              So, not to too worry as once you sail through P5 things in P6 are not that turbulence. :celebrate:

                Hi cwc...totally agree... so many of us in the same boat! :imdrowning:

                Everytime my dd will tell me she dont know how to do certain Maths questions, I no longer scold her anymore... because whenever she show me the questions, it will be some that either I took long time to solve or completely clueless!!!!

                For Science... I am studying with her for this SA1...really read through a lot of the guide books, assessement books etc... :oops:

                    Yes. EL compo. and CL compo. is better to write at least once a week as the school only cover about 10 CL compo. (refer to dd school) for the whole year and that is definetly not enough. EL compo. may be slightly more than CL compo.

                    Since both the compo. are 40 marks in P5 and P6 so better to build up the skill as earlier as possible.

                        As most parents would have already testified, there is really a quantum leap from P4 to P5 for most subjects. So most of the time, SA1 results is less than desirable, even for the best student. The better ones may suffer a 5% - 10% dip in results, while the average may suffer a 10% - 20% or even 30% dip. P5 SA1 is really the first taste of PSLE format.


                        What is more important is to identify the weakenesses and strengths in each subject, then, put together a plan (which both you and your child agree to) to acheive better results. P6 is a short year. By Term 2, most syllabus for PSLE would have been covered. I recalled that by term 3, most schools will start revision. So bulk of the P4, P5 work will be included in the PSLE. It is important to have a strong foundation for P4 and P5 work before moving up to P6.

                        Besides helping them out academically with tuition or self coaching, it is also important to motivate and encourage them regularly. I think support and encouragment from the parents will definitely spur them to greater performance.
