They are what made us what we are today, a creative bunch of senior brothers and sisters πŸ™‚ They are also the reason why we keep telling our kids how \"lucky\" they are for having the conveniences that we did not enjoy. On the flip side of the coin, they are also the essential components of learning and experimenting that I find so lacking in Primary schools today. In an age of abundance, there is no \"needs\" that drive the creation of innovative ideas to come from meeting these needs. There is little value placed in being able to create clever games from sticks, stones, bottle caps, kites when all the child needs to do is to wait for the next Playstation or Gameboy title. We have become a society of consumers, as opposed to a community of curious and eager learners.

Also during our time, we have more time on our hands to be creative. Creativity juices need time to ferment.

I didn't have much of a choice then. Only had 2 Secondary School choices compared to 6 that my boys had for their PSLE. And those days, it was BIG embarassment if one did not make it to the affliated Secondary School, was like our parents won't know where to put their faces if we DIDN't opt for and get into the affliated Secondary School, so getting into our first choice school (the affilated school) was of utmost importance then.

Different times.......I think I had 4 choices????Can't remember liao but definitely more than 2. My mum just let me decide.

And hands up those who stayed on St John's Island for their Sec 3 Camp?
Yes, rubber seeds!!! Loved rubbing them on the floor to get the heat. πŸ˜‰

BUT sad to say.... I've never been to St John's Island in my entire life.

Still remember my mum making me and my sis take that pilgrimage to kusu island before exams. She will go pray at some temple there and we will end up with a yellow band round our wrist. We see many of our schoolmates with that as well and we will go like, orh you also go kusu island ah, a lot of tortoise there hor.

Went sort of camping at St John’s island long time ago, in my teens I think. Still remember an incident. A friend was stung by something when he waded into the water. We all assume it was jellyfish, so some brilliant fella said he was told urine can neutralise the toxin, another one said must be virgin boy urine. Whatever it was, the fella who was stung was in enough pain that he asked a friend to pee on his leg. Nothing happened and all of us had a good time ragging the pee-er, cos conclusion was, he was no longer a virgin that’s why the urine did not work.

Yes, those were the days when we had only 2 choices for Secondary Schools and mind you, those schools were pre-selected (in July or August, I think), even before we sat for the PSLE!

Yes, those rubber seeds were fun to play with.

St John's Island was fun ... the camp fire, the songs and of course the \"ghost stories we told to scare one another late into the night!

Either you are much younger than I am or that your school did not organise such activities for you when you were in Sec 3.
