Ha Jennifer, thanks for sharing so much about English learning. My boy prefers those war books and history books. Let’s why he always make use of those strong words like hideous, charge, astounded in the normal writing about trivial life story. I have told him it is not a battle for every story. He also has a lot of grammar errors in his comp. Maybe, you are right. Instead of free reading, I start to ask him to recite some supermodel. Wish this method can help him to make use of correct words in comp and improve the sentence structure. Moreover, because we speak Chinese at home, he tends to translate from Chinese to English at the end of his wit. This leads to very awkward and ununderstandable expression to the teacher.

When the report book shows the overall Percentage, would expect that info be easily translated to overall ranking of student in class lvl and whole lvl. Why don’t they release this info as well, otherwise the overall Percentage by itself does not say much either.
Any thoughts to share … -
Happy Mama:
Quite similar to 2011 except for Maths. For the benefit of those with kids in Primary 2 this year.
Average SA1 for 2010 Primary 2 (in standard) as follows :-
2010
EL - 82.7
CL - 81.9
MA - 81.8
Either the Maths paper is difficult or the cohort is weaker in Maths. -

PHMummy:
what will happen if the child is not taking higher chinese in P6 next year?
What are your concerns? Class allocation at P6? Bonus HCL pts when appyling for SAP sec sch? Textbooks?
Think you better clarify this issue with the teachers if the need comes to drop HCL at P6. -

I think there is nothing wrong with reading war books/history books for leisure and vocabulary building. In fact, these types of reading can be useful for factual passages in cloze passages and compreh. And the vocabulary used in his compo is far more impressive, even for trivial life story.
Since the T pointed out the storyline has loopholes/gaps in logic, it might be necessary to read some other books that are closer to reality.
I bou a few model essay guides for my P4 boy. We read the stories and felt that these stories in the guide are very basic but they provide a good framework of how each pic shld be linked to each other and how a logical flow shld be like. Instead of reciting, I wld encourage you to discuss the storyline with your boy and brainstorm how to improve on it.
In our situation, it is EL-CL translation in the CL compo that is causing us a headache. What I did was to explain to my boy the rules of CL differ from EL. We talk abt it, rather than I preach abt it. I feel that by involving the child in discussing the rules, it get internalised into him easier than just me talking and him hearing (I wld not know if he is really listening and understands what I said).
Though this method is time consuming, I know that he really gets the point when one day, he argues with me abt sth by using what I hv said during one of our revision times. -

Does this year P2 hv less China-Chinese?GyGy:
Does anyone know the average marks for all subjects for this year P2? This year don't have the slip that they gave last year.
It is in the report book, but only the average for SA1 not the combined result.
Average SA1
EL - 83.2
CL - 80.2
MA - 76.7 -
markfch:
No -la! Bro Mark ....
Jialat, that appears to me to be quite low. At this rate, by the time our kids reaches P6, average scores will be 50+?
For P6 this SA1,
In the Region of 60+ to 70+ ....
And Sc is the highest with Avg of 78 .... -
