Entrance exam is required. The boys will be tested on all the subjects in 1 day. From there, they will select a few boys for each level. My boy told me that there were about 40 boys taking the entrance exam for his level (Pr 2 going for Pr 3). For Pr 1 to P2 level, the numbers are even more. The exam normally takes place end of the year.
Oh.. based on my understanding, if you place the kids on waitlist, if successful, it will be meant for 2011. Meaning, the boy will be in P2 upon enrollment. However, I believe it's worth the wait, given the reputation of the school... -
I know of some P1 parents who get in within the first month of school term…this way, no exam needed but it’s all based on first come first served basis. And a bit of shuffling…but must mentally prep your kid cos if he’s already started in another school, not having recess in the canteen may not be too pleasing to him. In MSHS, P1-P2 is all catered in…means they have their recess in the class and can only go out to play when they finish their food. Even if you opt out of the catered food, you will have to pack for him and he cannot go to the canteen.
I know there is a new rule for entrance exam…I think before, you have to take the exam to want to be considered for short-list but now, only if there is vacancy, they’ll let you take the exam…it’s on their website… -

Hi Ailina,
Yes, it's my twins who gotten a place... hence no balloting.. it was a lucky shave as i'm also worried about balloting given i'm staying more than 2km away.
Rest assured those within 1km should have no problem securing a place. When I'm there last week registering for my boys, there are less than 10 applications within 1km. One thing good is the school actually display how many parents have registered and the distance. Hence, if you go on day 3 for registration this week, you should have a good feel of the chances. Good luck...
Hi T2,
Thanks so much for the insight on how classes are conducted. My boys are very playful. Hence, i'm glad and hope the environment will be able to \"tone\" them down. And yes, I really wish their chinese can be better. I've been coaching them but it seems they don't have a interest in it..
Hi VVJJ... so u are the parent with twins !!! :celebrate: I heard that there is a pair of twins hence, no further balloting is done ... Congrats too .... My son is also going in next year... very excited for him.. tho i already have a girl in P2 ....

Hi, my sons are also successful in securing a place next yr. They are rather weak in Chinese. Initially, i was thinking of enrolling in either SJI or MSHS. Decided on MSHS as i wanted them to be able to converse more in their mother tongue language. Any parents with ideas how the kids are coping in school with Chinese?
Hi,
My son is good at recognising chinese characters but does not like to converse in mandarin. Every time we try to talk to him in mandarin, he will reply in English. I understand from a friend that MSH will help and provide intensive holiday lessons to children who are weaker in Chinese. We had also initially thought of SJIJ since it is nearer to us, and similar to you, we thought a \"more chinese\" oriented environment would probably be more beneficial to him.
:celebrate: -
The homework is quite manageable...not too bad...I think my girl in Katong Convent got more homework...
Quite a bit of Chinese writing though....
At P1, they have English Compo ..which they call picture description...
After term 1, once the teachers know your kid's standard, they will be more on...once your boy starts to slack even a little bit, your phone will ring....but to me, I prefer it that way...before it builds up to be a big problem better to nip it at the start...
Also, their test is after each unit....then they take an average to form the CA result. I find this method useful as it helps to identify exactly which part of the sllyabus the child is weak at. Easier for the little fella to score better.
Last term, for the first Chinese unit test, my boy scored 80%...letter to attend remedial came straightaway. I wrote in to ask for exemption and to explain that he just began tuition...so he was excused....so far, I got no more letters for all subjects...

[/quote]Thanks for e heads up... My son is not exactly wild on doing hw and he is good @ skimming thro quickly and then tell me \"DONE !!\" ...I also like the idea of teacher being on the ball.. then wait till mid year exams for surprises

My son also has this habit, he used to skimp thru his homework telling me it's but me and hubby gave him a stern telling off...what I also do is when he does home assessment, if he does well, I praise him big time....it's a big morale booster....I notice he strives to score well now...
Boys need alot of pep and prep talk....encouragement from us is very important...Also impt to identify his strengths and weaknesses...my girl does well in daily work, but stress during exam so I know she has problem performing under stress...my boy totally different...he bo chup daily work but if he knows it's test or exam, he will score... :?
But based on experience with my girl, it's very important to start right...P1 is really foundation setting time...
