All About Preparing For Primary One

We started by giving DD a $1 coin, though she could already calculate $$ before starting P1. However, it is better to give them $1 or $1 + $0.50. The canteen vendor will help these P1s. You can also start them by letting them take $$ to buy things when you are out with them.

my ils runs a hardware business so sometimes they get DS & DD to help sell stuff. Simple tasks like when an item cost $2 and the customer gives a $5 note, we ask DS (the elder one) to calculate the change to return the customer. ( training him in his add or sub skills)
then if an item cost maybe like $0.70 & the customer gives $1 coin, we ask DD (the younger one) to see what & what coin = the amt to give back. ( sometimes with DS helping her)
training her to differentiate between the types of coins: $0.05, $0.10, $0.20, $0.50 & $1.00. she knows all of them by hard now.
For DS, its more on training & practise. For DD, it more of exposure & a little training

Is $1 enough to eat a meal? I have no idea at all as I have not been to a primary school in 20 years. -
YKVT:
Depends on school - you need to check out canteen. DD's school canteen's food is usually $0.60 - $0.90. We do not allow her to buy drinks as she brings water to school. So $1 is enough for her.Pen88n:

On 1st few days of P1, kids usually have buddies (older children to bring them around) during recess. Most schools also allow you to be there for the 1st few days, though may not be able to go near to them. You can see and adjust the pocket $$ amount accordingly. -
on those days where you packet home-cooked lunch for child, $1 should be enough. hope that they don’t spend entire $1 on buying stationery.

Just to clarify: $1 is for recess only. Some school canteen food more ex, so might need up to $1.50 - $2. If kid need to take lunch in school, then you need to give more $$ or pack lunch.

how to control kids from spending $ on unnecessary stationery ? they see their classmates buy, then they follow too …

I told DD she cannot use the $$ to buy stationaries. If I find new stationaries in her pencil case, and it was bought from bookstore, I will confiscate! I reward her with stationaries when she does well or behave well. In this way, she will not go and buy stationaries with her pocket $$.
I also make her save her $$ and we agree on a target - sometimes it is to save $10 to put into bank, sometimes it is to save $5 so that I will top up another $5 for her to buy her fav book.
Anyway, she does not have much left to buy stationaries either. -
Do the children have enough time to queue up and eat during recess time?

Should be enuf. They even have time to go library or play if they are fast in getting food and eat.
