          Experienced employers, please advise.

My maid asked to go home, and we decided to let her go.

          Questions:

          (1) Anyone knows of a good place to buy cheap air tickets to Myanmar?

          (2) I don’t have to notify the agency, do I?

          (3) This is for my husband. If we don’t want to send her back, is it ok to send her back to agency? If so, must we still pay for her lodging since maid was the one who said she doesn’t want to work for us.

          Thanks!

            madinked,

Has your maid finished her loan? If yes and she wants to go home then she must pay for her own air-ticket. If no and she wants to go home then you need to return her to agency and get her transfer out.

You need to pay for lodging till she get transfer out. Same for levy, you still pay the levy till she gets transfer out.

Um, according to MOM laws, employers have to pay for their maid's fare back to their country/city of origin. I don't believe there is provision whether they finished their loan.

                (1) Anyone knows of a good place to buy cheap air tickets to Myanmar?
Try http://www.airfares.com.sg to see what the promo fares are. It's a bit unlikely to find really cheap tickets becos I don't think there is any budget air that goes there - can try though.

                (2) I don't have to notify the agency, do I?
No. even if she has not finished the loan, you don't have to notify if you are willing to swallow the 'loss'.

You can send her back to agency. They'll probably try to brainwash her to work for another family (earn more commission). During her time there, YOU are still liable for her - eg if she gets hurt and needs to go hospital, you gotta bear the medical bills; if she runs away, you have to bear the runaway loss (eg if you didn't buy insurance for that bond). And I think they will charge you lodging/food per day (think it's typically $20 per day). And you'll still have to pay for the foreign worker levy becos her work permit will be registered under your name.

At least she gives you an answer early so that you can focus on searching for a new maid now.

hquek, yes it is true that it doesn’t matter if the maid has paid up the loan but it won’t benefit the employer because technically the employer is still servicing the loan with the agency. If the maid leaves now, employer still need to continue the loan if you did not inform the agency. If the loan is not finished, best to inform agency so that agency can give you free replacement and refund you back whatever is outstanding or just put the outstanding loan on new maid. This was what happen to my myanmar maid. The maid agency refund me all the outstanding and I went to another maid agency. It is then up to maid agency to decide what they want to do with the maid.

Btw, just for everyone’s information if you want to buy myanmar air-tickets, go to Peninsula Plaza. There are a few travel agencies there. Go to the 3rd level travel agency, more attractive rates. air-ticket would cost about $250, depending on season sometimes can go up to $410. If you ask maid agency to buy for you, they will quote you $350.
