OMG!! It feels like I just thrown $500+ into the sea. I'm not aware of such unpublished rule & don think I have the time for such volunteering work as well. Guess I'm left with Ngee Ann Pri for my son. Thanks for the advice.
larkspur:
Thank you all for your advice. Guess my son's chance for Tao Nan is really slim. Nevertheless, our Plan B will be Ngee Ann Pri coz our PV volunteering for Red Swastika has been rejected.

it is good that you have plan B. I have done my volunteering in huay kuan and i know many mummies and daddies doing volunteer work of almost 80 to 100 hours just to get recommendation letters from huay kuan for tao nan and ai tong. It is now an unpublished rule that to get recommendation letters for these 2 schools, have to clock at least 80 hours of volunteer works and every year the balloting at phrase 2b is within 1km. All these parents who clock 80 hours or more move to within 1km.
Not wasted if you considered joining acitivites and their cultural troop activities. They also have lessons which has discounted rate for members. Anyway you can still try your luck to see can get the recommendation letter. Actually i did not know these 2 schools so hot until i talked to these parents and realised almost 80% of the volunteer parents are aiming these 2 schools. Sometime there is email out to request for volunteers for events based on first come first serve reply, if you did not reply within half an hour the email is out, dun bother to reply cos there will be hundreds of them replying and some parents actually set their iphone such that once there is email from huay kuan they can reply within a minute. you can see how competitive it is now even to volunteer. Actually if you did the volunteer, you will know all these. -
Hi all,
Need some advise. I have joined SHHK since 2008 and will be registering for my son in 2012. So based on # of years, I would have joined the clan for 4 years. I am not able to get any volunteer opportunity as is always gone in less than 30 mins… sigh… Does anyone here knows if there is anything else we could do to increase the chance e.g. donation to the clan, participate in their monthly activities ? I tried calling up a few times to check with the admin but she always very bluntly told me dont know…
Please assist. -
Yen73
you cannot do donation cos i talked to the admin before and she mentioned they dun accept donation. donation to school no no too cos if they found out, your child will have to transfer out and look for another school.
you will have to just cross your finger and prayed that you can get the recommendation letter if you dun have the volunteer opportunity.
or like those parents who used iphone to get immediate email from huay kuan or like me have to go purposely buy ipad and do setting so that once email from huay kuan is out, i can reply immediately -
hi yen73,
in the application form, there are 3 things that will be of use.
1. number of years as member (the more the merrier),
2. number of hours volunteered (again, the more the merrier),
3. endorsement by council member. If you can find someone who’s council member to endorse your application, you will gain more ‘marks’.
What’s impt is which school you are looking at, if you are talking about CF and KH, based on past understanding, I think you may be able to get the letter. If AT/TN, then start praying that demand won’t be that high.
But what’s finally MOST impt is how far you are away from the school. If you are more than 1km, good luck becos your chances already are slim. More than 2km, nonid to think, better start plan B.
My kid didn’t manage to get into a shhk affiliated school (distance issue). But we’re very happy where he is and was pretty glad things turn out that way. -
hi yen73,
btw, donation to the clan won’t help any bit. and if you’ve read their financial statements, the clan is extremely loaded.

Hi all,
Thank you for your prompt responses! looks like the chances of getting the recommendation letter is very slim
sigh.. never know that is so tough and it seems to get tougher each year !
hi Hquek, may i know where is your son studying now ?
cheers -
hi yen73,
pm you liao - although it’s no secret becos I’m there in the parents networking thread. -
Dear all,
Thank you so much for replying to my queries… May i know out of all the SHHK primary schools (excluding Ai Tong and Tao Nan), which is less popular and if i could have chance if i am not able to clock more than 20 hours? Thanks a lot
Cheers, -
Yen 73,
you will have a better chance for chongfu cos i understand dun really need to even volunteer. Nan chiau another one but now the balloting at phrase 2b is for 1-2 km and every year more and more people going for nan chiau as there are more and more new flats within 1km of the school. Really depend on ur luck .last year i heard from some mummies no need to do volunteer still have letters to nan chiau. This year a lot of mummies going for nan chiau and i am taking no chance so i did a lot of volunteer works to secure my chance of waiting for my recommendation letter -
Yen73,
actually you should try to find out from huay kuan about the doubts and check with other mummies doing the volunteer in the recent year especially late last year. so much has changed in huay kuan requirements cos in the past, there weren’t many people who know to go through the huay kuan way but now it becomes such a public knowledge that cannot get PV go by huay kuan. i have seen the ways things have changes since i started my volunteer 2 years ago till only recently and i have been very kiasu to ensure that i enrolled in huay kuan when my girl turns 2 years old. i have clocked about 40 +hours through volunteer for the past 2 years. It was tiring and especially this year when i have to take leaves to do the volunteer until my manager is not really very happy with me taking leaves almost every month. I am telling you this so that you know what is happening and make your decision based on the updated information.i know of one mummy who has been member since her son is 6 months old and now her son at 3 years old, she is starting to go full force into volunteering
Forgot to add that when i mean a lot of parents clocking their hours away for volunteers, they are all staying <1km of the school and their membership are normally 3 years and above
