It’s my first time getting a Burmese maid and I agree that their English is lousy! However, to make things work, I actually employ a tutor for her! I managed to get this Burmese Native working in Singapore to teach my maid English once weekly. My maid’s English improved tremendously and by 3 weeks with us, she is able to communicate with others in English.

However, lately, she saw this headline on Today’s, "Should maid get an off day every week?" and yes, she understands! She actually took the papers to show me! Claiming that she doesnt quite understand the contend fully and would like me to explain!! I was feeling so upset and wondering if I am doing the right thing to be nice to her!!

Haiz. Does she still have outstanding loan with you? If no, then you have the upper hand. It is totally up to how comfortable u are in giving off day.If yes, then wayang with her until loan clear first, then decide whether u want to let the agent handle or not.

My current maid is Burmese, after 2 indo maids. She's no perfect and doesn't do things very well, but I consider her a godsend.

          1. she always welcome me home with a smile,
          2. not one to worry about her money (she asked me to keep, each time I asked her to check, she'll tell me don't need),
          3. able to accept when she has done something wrong (we don't scold her, bearing in mind that burmese tend to be prouder),
          4. she loves my kids to bits,
          5. she can eat pork (I'm no longer drinking chicken based soup only)

She came not knowing much language, but happily, she is starting to understand more of what we say (or maybe we got used to communicating with her in a variety of styles). She's not too clean but at least got no smell (my first indo maid had a smell about her). She's willing to exert energy in washing/cleaning (unlike my 2nd maid who behaves with a princessy air about her).

Ultimately I think it all depends on luck and what the family situation requires, and also if the maid needs the money or just come with the idea to have fun. Mine is quite light work (clean the house, that's all). There'll always be adjustment issues becos she wasn't brought up the same way as me, but I think we can work it out.
I have had a similar experience with my burmese maid in the sense that she has a cheerful disposition. Now that i read so many posts, it occurred to me that she has never really apologised for her mistakes - but guess whats important is that she makes attempts not to repeat them.
After about almost a year though find that she is getting to be a bit defiant but i need to be firm about my requirements.
She is a bit curt in her speech - & while it does not affect me - MIL tends to feel that the maid is undermining her authority!
Anyway - my policy is to change my helper every 2 years as they get too familiar & i find it hard to be firm - as i may have already allowed them some liberties!

To bluff 10years difference is hell for the employer. I think 16 years old not mature enough.

Yes, agree totally...Totally freak me out today..But what can i do? send her back? She's only 3 days here..and my parents like her alot...to the extend that my mum told me..she call her umpteen times to take dinner but she still continue to work...I told my mum have to be firm with her..she's only 3rd day..of coz if she act has to act hardworking...let her get used to not listen to our instructions then we will have hard life later.. and i told my mum to put aside dishes meant for her only and not let her pick and choose her food..my mum juz dun listen...i told my mum if in future she is spoilt or what...dun ever complain to me...haiz..now away from home..yet has to take in these nonsense...cant stand :stupid:

and now if she is only 16 yo...how i dare to stress her to work? it juz remind me of the ID maid incident where she push the child down...My gal is only 19mths... Argghhh! It's really freaking me out! But my mum thought i am juz overly worried...kp telling me to treat her like a child! Harlow..I pay govt levy and monthly salary to her for her to help me..not to adopt another child!!! :stupid:

My maid will need to help out in looking DD here and there…my mum will be around la…hire this maid is solely to do hsework…but i know my mum…sometimes she is "lazy" or need a break…she sometimes may outsource DD to maid (if she knw she can depend on her). BUt the thing is I dun trust the maid esp she’s juz a 16 yo! How can she handle a todd if my gal were to throw tantrum…

This is actually not a new prob…when i juz give birth…my mum is particularly close to a neighbour…so when i leave my gal to her after my ML…i know sometimes my mum will put my gal to the neighbour (which i absolutely hate coz she has 4 kids on her own and i dun really like their behaviour…dun want my gal to imitate => which she already does some and i am still trying to correct her) I did tell my mum off but her reason to me is she is too tired juggling between hsework and an active todd… That is the reason why I hire a maid! But now…haiz…that’s y i know if my mum feel comfy with maid ard…she may outsource my gal to her…BUT a 16 yo may be able to handle hsework…Handle an active todd / when she throw tantrum…Def NO NO…doubt she can handle…

Anw…i told my mum since a maid is here…her job is mainly hsework…and my mum’s job is to handle my gal…Hopefully my mum will listen…

Haiz…sometimes i do feel that…i may have less of these problems if i decided to put her to a cc instead of passing to my mum…one of the major prob of letting grdparents take care…is they really spoil her… my dad even let my gal climb the bed bunk… and even told me jokingly say my gal is strong…I am fuming mad when i heard it… I scold him and say he dun know wat is called dangerous?? why let her climb… WL…really mad manz… I am lucky to have family support in terms of taking care of my gal…But sometimes too much support may not be good too…

Sorry abt this post… I need to rant!!!

No worries! I have been through pretty much wat you are experiencing. I took the cc way. I know being the only grandchild, they are going to spoil her. Maybe u need to let ur mom know that the maid is only 16 and there is no way a child can look after another child. If it really doesn’t work out, then cc might be the only option. Better be safe than sorry. I am also paranoid over maid looking after my DD. I don’t allow my DD to interact too much with the maid as my DD will throw tantrum (only child problem) to her. Children are smart and they know who they can bully. One of them is the maid.

Yes...in actual fact..from start i do wanna go the cc way..but my dad is faster than me in the sense tat b4 i announce any decision on care-taking..my dad say let them take care of my bb..so I in a way LL...i spoil my parents also so dun want to upset them..so juz let them take care..but after i give birth..i regretted it immediately.. Yes..i am paranoid too..and when i am home with DD..i do not allow them to interact much..give instructions to do hsework..DD i take care myself..but when i call my mum for past two days..my mum is trying to get DD used to maid..but DD refused..juz stick to my mum (hopefully stay this way) and Yes..children are real smart..my dd already start bullying my maid on 1st day..i change her diaper..ask her to throw (usu she will walk to dustbin and throw) instead..she pass to maid.. i am speechless! :yikes:

today my parents gave me a shock...i left my 3-day old maid with my parents as i need to go for a biz trip... my parents this morning ask her how old she is...she say she 24 to my mum...say 25 to my dad...my dad test her further ask her wat year she born...she say 1995 (which is 16 years old!) my mum say no wonder! she dun look 24/25..look less than 20 years old! OMG..is she that young? her passport / wp / agent all say she born in 1985...

Nothing new! The indons and mynmar agents are responsible for this, their ages are normally inflated. The maids are taught to say they are 23 or they will be reported to the police. MOM requires the maid to be 23 b4 they can enter sg thats why. My first mynmar was 38 but she looked young and her passport states 29. The 2nd tol me she is 21 but her passport states 25, my third mynmar is only 19.
Only the filipinas ages are quite correct but not their height especially if they are short.
I suggest you call yr agent and c what he says. He will probably tell you that they rely on info given by the agent in mynmar and they dnt get to c the girl. :nailbite:
Actually we are employing children to look after children and paying high salary for them to  MOM knows their ages are incorrect but still issue w/p.
