        Haiz. How to be good in English and mandarin at the same time? DD is good in English but cant say much for her mandarin.

        Let her read more Chinese books. The only way to improve is to read and speak the language

        Problem is I don't know how to read myself. How to teach her? headache. :slapshead:

There are also suggestions on Chinese enrichment centres in this forum, if you are keen. To improve language skills, must have opportunity, to listen, speak, read and write. Once learn new words, use it so that can improve.

          There was an article about a P4 who dislike Chinese and her result in the subject was not good. She became interested in the language when she was introduced to interesting stories. She obtained very good results for PSLE.

              @SAHM_TAN I really tried but I get very frustrated doing it. You see I am a perfectionist. I expect DD to be able to recognize the chinese character after I go through with her. While her enrichment school teacher feel she is doing fine, I still find her weak.

                  Usually, kids will forget, so need to repeat till it becomes permament memory. The length of time differs.

                  I was like you but learnt that no use to be frustrated, just have to match the child's pace.

                      hi bigsnoopy,

                      why not send yr child to learn & recognize chinese characters first, from programme 'SPEEDY Chinese Character Recognition' by Smiling Star?

                      it is taught in Community club.
                      school fees $120 per Term for 3 months. Taught by teacher from Smiling Star. They starting one class this Saturday, 4 pm at \"Ci Yuan\" community club in Hougang Avenue 4. So far, only 3 kids registered. Need 2 more then can start class.

                      course details:-
                      ===========
                      http://www.smilingstar.com.sg/speedyrec.htm

                      it says here:-
                      ========
                      - easy to learn, new teaching method.

                      - able to identify and read about 600 unique Chinese Characters to be taught in P1 and P2.

                      - Effective results, can see improvement in 3 months.
                      - Localized context according to words that MOE required children to know in Primary School.

                      - Learn words and know the meaning,through games and fun.
                      - Systematic words recognition helps in writing composition

                      CC details:-
                      =======
                      http://one.pa.gov.sg/CRMSPortal/CRMSPortal.portal?_nfpb=true&_windowLabel=CRMSPortal_1&_urlType=render&_mode=view&CRMSPortal_1_action=ACMParticipantMaintain&_pageLabel=CRMSPortal_page_1&IdProdInst=16763679&CWT=

                      they will teach you essential Chinese characters, ready for Primary 1.

                      come back home, revise with him. Once your child familiar with Chinese characters, can start reading with him \"Si Wu Kwai Du\" series recommended by Tamarind, in another thread (google). Then his Chinese will improve.

                      currently, yr child still weak in recognizing chinese characters. Hence, can't read well. Once his foundation in recognising chinese characters is built up, he will be on his way up.

                      if Hougang too far for you, call tel: 9145-6321 (smiling star organizer), ask where is the nearest CC or RC closest to yr house, day and time slot availability.

                        bigSnoopy,

                        sometimes you need an external party to kickstart for you this speedy chinese character stuff. Once kickstart, yr job at home becomes easier when comes to revision with him. Because yr revision becomes 2nd round, not 1st round. 1st round is the tiring one.

                        the teacher already expose him to 1st round. If pay $120 for 1 Term ( 3 mths) can solve yr headache, then tell yourself … the $ is well spent. just try it out for 1 Term, see also good.
