paulyn, I agree sometimes its very tiring to make the kid do MYC ‘homework’ everyday. But the peer ‘competition’ and the encouragement from teacher seems to be help most of the time.

                hi,

you may try Edvox Music school.
                website:- http://www.edvox.com/

at 5 yrs old, during lessons, children get to practise learning and playing both musical instruments - keyboard and violin. The school provides you keyboard and violin to bring home, practise at home.

later when the child turn 6 yrs old, he can choose which musical instrument of preferance to specialise in.

school fees reasonable - learning both keyboard and violin.
how are the fees and class duration and class size? can pm me? TQ.

Edvox starting new class soon in July, Friday evening.

only 1 kid registered so far. You may join them. Can’t recall start what time ? Friday 5 pm, or 6 pm ? call up to check.

school fees around $330 per Term, but learn 2 instruments.

start with keyboard first. Learn half a yr to master the basics of keyboard.

half a year later, then start violin.
end of one year, child can play both instrument, simple songs.

many people say violin tougher to learn, compared to piano.

Question is does parent need to be involved? ie sit in during lesson? Yamaha make it compulsory. I thought piano is more difficult to learn beacause need to use 2 hands. So same concept as CMA, must use left and right brain.

Both instruments have it’s own difficulties. Piano is an easier instrument to pick up as it’s more "visual" compared to the violin. But it’s not easy to play it well, you need good techniques to have a nice tone and such must be emphasized right from the beginning. The violin is difficult to pick up but once you master good bowing techniques and finger memory of the position, the instrument is a natural singing instrument compared to the piano.

For 5-6 year old, music classes in a group setting will be more fun and encouraging for the little ones. At least a variety of musical activities can be done from singing, music & movement, playing percussion instruments, keyboard, basic theoretical skills. It is definately more age-appropriate for young children at this age to explore various activities rather than to sit or stand still for 30mins to learn an instrument. That being said, every child is different, if you feel your child has the maturity and musical aptitude to start an instrument earlier, why not?
