Thanks for your encouragement. I make things difficult for myself. For example, cooking claypot rice with my rice cooker, I can just dump everything in but because I want to retain the tenderness of the chicken, I will monitor the cooker till it count down to 10 mins before I put it in. When I bake pork ribs, I can just leave it in the oven for 45 mins. But I use 30 mins to bake covered with aluminium foil, and another 30 mins without, and within that 30 mins, every 10 mins or so I would baste it with the juice. When I wash veg, I tend to wash each leaf, though I trying to stop myself and just soak it in salt water, then wash.......steam egg, i will make sure no bubbles, the list goes on...when my DH cooks, he is very fast chop chop done :rotflmao:

oh...so i am not the only sahm that don't cook everyday.

my 'menu' also very limited. my ds2 told me,'no pasta please'. his favourite order is 'fried rice' πŸ˜„ i give them steam eggs every other day and they love it. i like to cook peas/beans cos easy to wash. don't like leafy veg cos takes a long time to clean/wash (i get paranoid).
haha, don't worry, you are not. i know plenty other SAHMs who don't cook everyday.

my boys love pasta lei. everyday can eat pasta. it is me and Dh who cannot, Dh esp needs rice. so i just force the boys to eat whatever i cook, if it is something they don't like.

aiyah, to have the kids and Dh like different things is very troublesome. Dh cannot be forced, so force the kids lor. (for me lah)

if you have no time constraint then it's ok lah. your way takes more time but taste and look better what. πŸ™‚

oh, my mom loves to wash stuff with salt too. even the fruit skin, like grapes. she says salt is the best/ easiest/ most natural and cheapest stuff to kill germs.

i don't wash too clean, but definitely cleaner than outside lah. my friends who used to work in restaurants (overseas undergrads, all work in restaurants to earn pocket money) tell me after working in the back, don't dare to eat out anymore. they tell me, very very dirty one.

Last time used to order Tingkat dinner but after a while got tired of it. The one we had was very oily and some days even sliced cucumber is considered a dish which I find unacceptable! So now it’s back to cooking but I only have time to cook simple dishes. For example,

            1) Chicken or beef pasta (buy sauce and add mixed veg, button mushrooms, meat). For variety, vary between spaghetti, vegeroni, linguine, elbows.

2)lotus root soup (just dump lotus roots, peanuts, pork ribs into slow cooker n cook for a few hours, then cook rice)

3)hainanese chicken rice (buy pre-prepared chicken rice paste from supermarket, add to rice, chicken wings or drumsticks, mixed vegetables in a casserole and microwave)

4)fried rice (stir-fry mixed veg, omelete, chicken)

5)pineapple fried rice (buy pre-prepared paste and fry with rice, pineapple cubes, mixed veg, chicken. Add raisins n cashew nuts before serving.

6)Bak Kut Teh (buy the Bak Kut Teh satchets n cook with pork ribs or chicken wings n garlic)

            Just to share…

Think your way the food should definitely taste better though it may take longer. πŸ˜„

                  Hi Kabby and linden2000,

                  Thanks for your support πŸ˜„

                  Hi Kabby,

I do have time constrain, so I will have a masterpiece and easy side dish that I can steam.

Getting better with cooking but still long way to go compared to my mother and MIL.

I have problem with cooking veg asian style, strange but true.

both my mom & mil were SAHMs who cooked everyday in their married lives. so i'm definitely nowhere near their standard too!

but ya, with more practice we get we become better!

i like cooking asian stuff but i find it easier to bake and prepare western stuff. has it got something to do with how western recipes are clearer and easier to follow and produce consistent results?

with learning asian stuff, i ask mil or mom, and they always say, add some this, add some that, no precise amts cos they cook all the time, just feel and taste along the way, can already. for me, not as much experience as them, so the trial and error will have hits and misses. not consistent like how my cakes or pastas are.

really can't understand how come they don't appreciate it, when they see you have a full time job, still cook and clean for them. sigh....

Just to clarify that when i was still a FTWWife... i was usually barred from my kitchen. Apparently i don't know what her son's taste is like or even if i know my standard just wasn't on par.. noe wat i mean. 😞

                        So, whatever.

Back then hubs will request for me to cook during weekends. Super. 6days work week plus one weekend burnt for wife duties. Sometimes we go out to eat too. πŸ˜„ But if you think of it again, i had off the other 6 days ain't it not? I usually can't eat whatever she cooks. Not to my taste or liking. She'd whine that i didn't appreciate or that i am just a fuss-pot.

                        Again.. whatever.

though i used to live with in laws, we had a helper so i didn't need to cook or do housework. i think it's really tough for you. glad u have your own place now!
Having a helper is already half the battle won... with household chores. Envy. I had to slowly learn how to multi-task efficiently or else i'd never get anything done especially after having children. These days if hubs calls even DD2 can answer, \"Mummy's multi-tasking...\" if hubs asked the \"What's mummy doing...\" question.

Nothing beats one's own place regardless how small or no matter how big.. Important thing is one's own. While having own place should have been priority once married, there were too many hurdles to cross to get to the part. But fast forward 10 years.. it's finally mine. Things have never been better. And so i learn... and so i improve myself... and in doing so, i'm much happier. While moving on means more than meets the eye... i'd take it one step at a time hoping 10 years more down the road will see sweeter fruits to the years of perseverance. :xedfingers:
