      Hi all,

Apparently excessive eye rubbing can affect the degree of the astigmatism.

did the optometrist confirm on this?

Yes, was told this by the optometrist we saw at the SHC as well as the one at the optical shop....

        MLR:
Hiya precious3, I think that your boy got into the habit of rubbing his eyes was becos he couldn't see well due to his astig. I hv quite severe astig, and it would be best describe as blur vision, not like you can't see as in myopia, but jus can see sharply enough, so the tendency to rub your eyes to \"see\" clearer.

Modern kids/adults are constanly engaging in short distance eye straining activities like between homework, with their PSP/computer/handphone/tv, etc. Which is luminated background and very fast speed movements which causes eye fatigue and often when engaged in such activities, your eyes don't blink which is its natural way of rest.

Avoid long period of short distance work (like reading, homework, computer, tv, etc) Got to rest the eyes preferably every 30 mins when engaging in such activities. By resting, a simple eye shut for 10 mins is good enough, as I do understand that its not possible to rest too long when doing homework, or else cannot complete in time....
        Hi MLR,

Tks for the tip! I've asked my DS why he rubs his eyes and he says its because they are itchy.... could also be because of the lack of blinking like you mentioned. The optometrist told me to get him some eye drops to see if it will help.... Will have to give that a try!

          Hi there

From what I know, the screening at the kindergartens are part of the National Myopia Prevention Programme (by HPB)

The tests used only measure visual acuity (how well or clearly a person can see). It does not measure myopia (shortsightedness). This is because there are many reasons why a person cannot see properly. However, myopia is the most common cause of poor visual acuity in Singapore.

And yes, there are cases of spontaneous improvement. My parents and sister are all myopic and need to wear glasses. I was told at 7y old that I was shortsighted but my optician (amazingly) advised me to do without for a time. He suggested that I 'train' my eyes to focus far and then near. I am now 35 and have never worn glasses. But that's just one case lah 😉

About using eye drops. When you are getting them from the pharmacy, preferably get those that are in single dose, cos it prevents contamination. Its easier to bring around and safer to use (don’t hv to worry about tip touching eye and cross contaminate, etc).

I believe it is the right way to improve myopia by training the eye to see far. You optician is very unusual compare to optician nowadays.

May I know how your optician told you to train your eye to focus far and near?

              Thanks

Just to share. My son used to rub his eyes very often. We asked him why and he told us that his eyes were very itchy. Then he started to blink his eyes very frequently too. So we brought him to an eye specialist to have his eyes checked. We told the specialist that we worried his frequent blinking of eyes will become a habit .The specialist told us that constant blinking of eyes in children is actually not a habit. There are reasons to his constant blinking & rubbing of eyes. 1st one is he cannot see clearly, 2nd is the eyelashes may have got into his eyes. 3rd reason is due to sensitive and dry eyes. So after checking my son's condition, he falls into the 3rd reason, i.e. he got sensitive & dry eyes. So to rectify this problem, he needs to be on eyedrops everyday. The specialist says this is not a serious condition, but just that it will be a lifetime treatment.

Has anyone ever used or bought those eye relax or eye exercise machines to try and correct myopia? Care to share experience and cost?

Astigmatism is basically due to the cornea having two different curvatures which is not being compensated by the lens. (for those who doesn’t know what this is)

A perfect cornea is one that looks like a soccer ball where the light entering the eye will be focused on to one point. however, for astigmatism, the cornea will look like a rugby ball, where one curve is steeper than the other.
This would then result two different focal point on the retina.

In some cases, the lens would compensate for this but in most cases, it doesn’t. Hence, the existence of astigmatism.

Sad to say, in most cases, astigmatism can not be improved, unless when the eye growth has stable - not growing anymore, which is usually after the age of 16 to 18, go for lasik…
