All About Preparing For Primary One

Wah... and I thought u never prepare your kid...I think to prepare or not also depends on how your child is faring in terms of basic knowledge for a K2 kid. By the end of K2, they should have a decent grasp of their number bonds within 20, able to put together 3-5 simple sentences, have a decent grasp of the HYPY and high frequency chinese characters.
DD is in RGPS. P1 was pretty much a breeze. Chinese, mainly HYPY until 2nd semester, Math, number bonds and addition and subtraction within 20 for 1st semester, until 99 for 2nd semester, English, they are using Stella so no books to follow.
There is more emphasis on verbal skills, so if you want to, maybe do more show and tell stuff with your kid. The other thing that I went through with DD, not before P1 but throughout her P1 year, were more homework/exam tackling skills. Little things like if this page ends with question 5, make sure that the next page starts with question 6. Draw a line to create a column for your workings. Label/number your the steps in your working, how to work backwards to check that your answer is correct(for math), how to use the english and chinese dictionary, stuff like that.
And at the end of the day, it all boils down to what we parents can accept as 'acceptable results' from our kids.
:faint: :faint: :faint: -
Not before P1 mah. Seriously, b4 P1, all I did was dig up some loose change, 10, 20, 50 cents and ask her to pick up different combinations for me. But I am lucky cos her K2 teachers, and now also DS's K2 teachers, covered the basics with them pretty thoroughly.
The rest all happened during the school year and it was more just giving her pointers on how to work more efficiently. Haha. Those stuff, no point telling your kid now if you are not into getting him/her to do assessments, etc. Too abstract for them to understand, must be done in conjunction with their work. These are habits/skills that I want my girl to pick up, not academic preparation as in teaching her ahead of syllabus. -
Preparing for P1,
English - Nope. Letting CC do their syllabus with DD1 and I have just using her K2 books to revise with her now and then. Not using any p1 materials to teach her yet. Though I am considering in enrolling her for a Bridging K2 English program (6 Days), it will be in November so yet to confirm
Chinese - It is just CC and Enrichment. I did buy her P1 writing book but that was because there wasn’t any K2 books for her to practise her handwriting. I am quite picky on handwriting …
Maths - CC doesn’t cover that much and mummy finds it hard to follow thru on the basics so she’s in enrichment to cover the foundation and basics. CC is actually teaching multiplication but enrichment is still strengtening her addition and subtraction before she moves on. -
Daddy
 train her to recognise the $$ is more impt that buying her a cute purse..
Cool...
I was kinda overwhelmed when I browse thru those test papers online...
dunno if I shld subject my dd to this \"torture\"...
:stupid:
And yes... wonder if she can handle the loose $$ on her own... buy her a cute purse?
I am training my ds now to differentiate the $$.. and how much change he should be receiving when he pay for his food using i.e S$1 coin.. -
My ds very lazy..
Now, I am also forcing him to eat on his own.. without Ah Ma feeding him.. too pampered..
I told him nobody will be there to feed him when he goes P1 next year.. then he will starve till he is home.. -
Money - Yet to teach DD1 how to calculate the change but have been getting her to buy her own food from the coffeeshops (I stand a distance and watch)
Feeding - DD1 has been feeding herself since 4 years. Slowly teach not to spill the food etc. taught her on using a knife and fork. She's trying to learn how to use chop sticks but gave up LOL coz it was tiring. She gets fed when she goes to her great granny place, which I am not bothered as long she feeds herself at home and when we are out
Dressing up and changing out - Independant since she's in CC and home also, she has to learn, Only 1 mummy , can't help all the time

Castle House:
It is normal for most of the kids when they are in the granny house, even my child is also the same problem. The best thing, he can even lost his coin bag in school and starve himself for half a day.My ds very lazy..

So we must also ensure not to give too much pocket money for them to spend as they may spend on unnecessary things. -

Don't worry :hugs: , enroling with tuition or enrichment is just enhancement.. isn't compulsory. It is really dependant on individual parent :boogie:
And I don't think she will be left out. Academics portion, shouldn't worry too much (she is in kindergarden or CC right?)
You might want to address the social and emotional aspect so that she isn't \"shocked\" when she shifts to P1 and will have an easier transition..
