              hi SAHM_TAN and LeeTaiTai,

Primary 1 'Visible Thinking Maths 1A and 1B' also good.

the examples illustrated inside - contain topics for ( + - x / ) visible concepts that deal with visuals. Hence useful because then, children can visualize, can 'see'. Once kindergarten K2 children can feel, can sense, can touch the objects, they understand concepts easier & much better.

publisher is Marshall Cavendish, with comments inside from Dr. Yeap.

              a) Maths 1A
              http://www.popular.com.sg/jsp/product/product_detail.jsp?vca001=112&vpd001=95289

              b) Maths 1B
              http://www.popular.com.sg/jsp/product/product_detail.jsp?vca001=112&vpd001=95290

can buy cheaper during Popular bookfair - around June, or late Nov / Dec.

regarding RRMummy's question on 'durian puff & cream puff' at P1 SA1 Paper 2,

Mother has baked some cream puffs and durian puffs. She wants to put 8 puffs into a box. In how many ways can she put the puffs in order to have at least one of each kind of puffs in the box?

for P1, i think important concepts we need to ground our child well in are Place values and Number bonds.

Place values refer to - Units, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Ten Thousands, etc. position. Once a child is clear about Place values, + - x operations won't become so confusing, even if the number grow big big into 2 digits, 3 digits, 4 digits, 5 digits very huge number.

actually that qn about curry puff is tricky. The concept on Number bonds was taught in K2 before and P1. The issue is - does the child know when and how to apply Number bonds concept ? This is the key thing. It's where the 'extra' thinking cap comes in. The qn actually tests the child's analytical, reasoning ability, thinking & processing skills, besides English reading ability.

does the qn actually test Mental abacus high speed - which many K2 kids been attending CMA abacus or 3G abacus enrichment? No, not really. At most, it helps in the quick calculation of how to come up with various combinations of 8.

but if the child doesn't 'see' it, or doesn't realize that it's actually testing on Number bonds concept, then no matter how fast his mental abacus speed is - the child still get stuck, bec dun know how to solve, nor how to proceed next step.

parents who can't decide where to send their kindegarten K1 /K2 children for fast mental abacus calculation enrichment lessons:-

                        i) to go community clubs for abacus which is cheaper, or

ii) to go CMA abacus (pay $280 for 10 sessions, using soroban abacus - with 1 bead at the top & 4 beads below), or

iii) to go 3G abacus (using 9 beads and lesser formulae to remember) ,

                        - may read Dr. Yeap comments here:-
