A SINGAPOREAN boy sat for the British equivalent of the GCE A-level examinations last year and aced all his papers - and he was not even 13 yet.

Muhammad Haikal Abdullah Zain, a former student of Rosyth School, scored straight As in Biology, Physics and Chemistry, which he took last November.

He turned 13 a month later and plans to apply to study medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

The A-level exams Haikal sat last year carry the same weight as the GCE A levels taken by junior college students here, said the British Council, which administers the exam.

NUS confirmed it would accept students with those qualifications.

Said its office of admissions director R. Rajaram: 'We recently learnt of his interest in applying to NUS. We will be pleased to assess his application when we receive it.'

Usually we heard of those who take higher level Math and ace them. These are not so tough for very young kids because if they are gifted in Math, they can do the sums with no difficulty.

But for the languages and sciences, it is tougher for the very young because it involves practical work and essay writing.
I guess at 12, he should be able to handle that, but still, it is amazing. Because some JC2 students struggle with triple science and he just ace them so easily at his age!
But medicine course in NUS is not easy, hopefully he has the maturity to take that, cos it is not just about academic excellence already.
They have attachments, have to do shifts, sometimes cannot sleep for many hours straight. Have to face cadavers, and in the hospital attachments, be in touch with many emotionally charged situations, like working to save someone for many many hours only to have the person pass away.
Even though as a student you need not be the one to break the news to the family, but you still have to quickly set that aside and continue with the next patient, and your other duties, all these within the space of a single shift.

Any chance that the kid can skip level in Primary school when he/she is bored as the lessons are not so challenging? Does the Form teacher help to assess the kid and perhaps provide some recommendation to the principal and/or MOE?
