Hi
DS2 is 6 years old tomorrow and starts UK Year 2 (your P1) in September. I am using the EPH Book "Preparing for P1 English", and I am struggling in getting him to understand the distinction between common and proper nouns. I show him real-life nouns and communicate which is a proper noun and which is a common one, yet he still struggles to understand them.
Any advice on how to help him, please? -

Firstly, Happy Birthday to DS2!! :rahrah: :rahrah:and I am struggling in getting him to understand the distinction between common and proper nouns. I show him real-life nouns and communicate which is a proper noun and which is a common one, yet he still struggles to understand them.

Now to the 'serious' business
Sometimes it is the terminology that boggles the mind of a kiddo.. I would have to stop awhile to figure our what is \"Present Perfect Tense\" etc etc
Suggestion: I would start with nouns which are his favourite cartoons / toys or people and things he always encounters eg.
Common - Proper Nouns: Introduction Stage
cookies - Oreos
cartoon - Thomas Tank?? / Ben10?
school - Name of his school
teacher - Mrs. XXX
daddy - Mr. YYY
mummy - Mrs. ZZZ
car - whatever car brand you are driving
fast-food restaurant - McDonald's
pizza - Pizza Hut
Check his understanding by giving him some words and let him tell you if its a Common/Proper Noun..celebrate it if he gets it right with alot of cheers!
Build up his confidence gradually..
Then, you could make it into a games. There are lots of life examples especially at the supermarket. The games can be played anywhere even in the car ( :offtopic: but sometime we play addition / subtraction or whatever game too
)
Oh and yes, after he has confidence also don't forget to highlight to him that in print the Proper nouns are always in capital letter so easier to detect :boogie:
Have fun!! :celebrate:
correction:
how could i have written detest instead of detect

Good Day, and I hope you are well.
Thank you for the greeting on DS2βs birthday. He liked your posting, too.
I will try to get him to think in terms of nouns he normally encounters. I do not think they will cover this till the middle of his Year 2 (your P1) - but i want him a little over-prepared. -

oh..he's reading eh..so this is for him..
HAPPY BIRTHDAY OPTIMISTFORUM JR.
and don't aim to over prepare too much.. reading is much more enjoying and that way they catch all this nitty gritty grammer stuff + vocab much easier.
Reminder hor.. don't overdo the kiasuism there!

Hi,
What is your choice of answer for the below?
1) He took ____ dogs out for a walk. James was away on business.
a. Jamesβ
b. James
c. Jameβs
d. Jameses
2) The mouse ran out of ____ hole to look for food.
a. its
b. itβs
c. it
d. itsβ -
Answer is (a) for both.
-
Yup, (a) for both. For names that ends in "s", apostrophe always come after that without the need for one more "s". Itβs refers to "It is".
