I'm not sure if my comment is useful but I was told unity has more Malay than Chinese. A mummy I've known, prefers yew tee due to that reason. So it might depends on your preference as well.

I believe all those who wish to enter the school will go for phase 2C. From there if there is more than 20, which I'm sure there will be, will ballot for these seats. The school will give priority to those staying 0.5km follow by 1km and so on. I'm observing the situation like you too. You fall in 1km right?

Meowie, whr did u hear abt the priority given to 0.5km? I believe the segregation is <1km, >1km, > 2km? SV is 1 school that goes by the book, they will not do anything unofficial...

From past history, 2C is always ballot for <1km (I don't even know when anyone in >1km ever got in at this phase), and from last yr onwards, Singaporeans gets 1 more ballot. What one can do is to wait till last day of 2C, sometime mid-day. SV admin will tell you how many has registered (try to ask if they can tell u the breakdown in terms of sgp vs non) ... they'll usually tell those that have no chance to not apply there, they even call those that's >1km to withdraw if the applications <1km has exceeded number. Looking at the number this yr, it looks like a tough ballot exercise... think then if you want to go for this fight n how your option will be in 2C supp if u did not win it... wat's the other schools' numbers like. A lot of parents will be running ard to the different schools to check the application numbers n then decide ... good luck.

Based on past history, balloting ratio for SV could be in the vicinity of 20% success rate for those within 1 km. Those outside 1 km would most likely not have any chance at all. Last year there were 121 applicants within 1 km balloting for 33 seats (27% success probability). This year with 21 seats (Yes 21 seats and not 19 seats because there were 2 withdrawals from earlier phases) the success probability may be lower, depending on the number of applicants. If the number of applicants within 1 km is about the same as last year, then the success probability would be 21/120 = 17.5%. However, many parents may be deterred by the stress of balloting considering the low success probability and would apply in other schools so the final number of applicants is anyone's guess.

There is no additional segregation of priority based on distance for applicants within 1 km. However, citizens get 2 ballot slips while PRs get only 1. So citizens have 100% better chance than PRs in the ballot.

My advice is to call up the school at the end of day 1, i.e. after 4.30 pm. By then the school may be able to advise those outside 1 km that there's no point applying if there are more applicants within 1 km than the vacancies available. If there's vacancies still available at the end of day 1, then can go to school to apply on day 2 but be prepared to withdraw the application should the situation changes. You still have day 3 to apply for other schools. In any case, I would advice that you should be clear about your 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice schools now. It's bad to make decisions in a rush when phase 2C starts.

ps. For SV, I think it's very, very unlikely to have vacancy for 1-2 km.

as to whether to give up your p2a2 privilege, ask yourself these questions:-
1) what are your backup plans?
2) are the schools in your backup plans acceptable and justify you giving up your P2A2 in another school priority?

in deciding such, look at whether you can secure your backup school (don't think you can withstand another round of balloting), and whether you can accept the backup school (in phase 2c supp). getting into SV via phase 2c will be a bonus but be prepared.

Personally, i dun find this comment useful at all.
Frankly all these \"i was told\" comments aren't useful in general.
It is best to comment on concrete evidence of school records or
personal experiences (of oneself or of an aquaintance) and not
of mere hearsay. Any comment based on race as being a factor
of school selection is almost insinuating that a school with races
more than the majority chinese is not a better school or a less
preferred one. Be mindful and more sensitive of the multi-racial
harmony we have as a community.

To answer ksunflower constructively, Unity Primary was one
neighbourhood school with a student scoring one of the top
PSLE results... (cannot pin on which year at this moment).
A student of mine went there and the mother said while it
was initially a matter of convenience sending her daughter
there, she was very heartened to find that her daughter is
enjoying school a lot and the teachers are caring.

Yew Tee Pri has a good principal who leads the school by
being involved herself and her innovative ideas brought
to the school has inspired the teachers hence benefitting
the students on the whole in general.

While making comparisons between schools in general, do
bear in mind that in a human-reliant industry it is really the
teachers teaching your child's class that matters. There are
market spoilers everywhere including the teaching industry.
So, while some parents rave that their children are doing
great in their respective classes, a handful of others may
beg to differ due to a different teacher with different
teaching styles.

Citing my own personal experience, in the same school where
my DDs attend... P1 teacher was of extraordinary calibre while
the elder DD at P3 back then had a crappy one who couldn't even
speak coherently in proper English... i had to correct him a few times. :rant:
