I knew after i met him face to face that i CANNOT depend on this teacher to ensure my DD has a
solid foundation of the concepts taught at P3. I even shared with him how to make his lessons less
boardy (whiteboard teaching=rote learning) and shared with him my materials. I believe
good things are for sharing and i vote for anything good that can benefit children in general.

Thanks for all your comments on YTPS & Unity.Appreciate it. Personally, I have checked both school on past PSLE results recored. Unity published individual students' results but YTPS only shared with the public in terms of %.

ALthough Unity has produced a top PSLE student in 1 year(2005? or 2007-can're really recall) but that to me is not consistent as it is only just mere 1 year, all depends on the student & quality of teachers at that year. Unless it is consistently scoring top almost every year.

Nevertheless, I think there are not much choices of schools as it is governed by the distance rule for those who do not qualify in the earlier phases.

What I would like to find out more about these 2 school are the personal experiences for those parents that have direct/ indirect experiences with the school in terms of interaction of the teachers, children studying in these 2 schools on both the standard of teaching and the environment for good studying.

ksunflower, did you go to the openhouse for these 2 schools before? Will give you a very good view of what they have to offer (that was how I decided on the school for my kid) … 1 way of doing it (but I’ve not done it before) is to stand outside the gate after school’s over to talk to the parents and observe.


I hear YTPS’s standard is going up, esp with the new Principal that puts in new initiatives like sending the P1/P2 kids to swimming classes during school hours. Homework is very little though and a mixture of the teachers that one gets there. I personally find that the school’s environment could be better (if compared to another school like SV)… with the train stopping the run behind the school, it should be better.

There are certain things that we can feedback to better the system or find out more as to how certain things are/have been carried out. Some are just beyond change even with constructive feedback.

We keep giving but get nothing. We pity DD cos she loves school and enthusiastic about learning. Watching her excitement for school die down because of one teacher... sigh... it was really sad. We had no choice but to endure a whole year of it. I had to personally pump in my 200% to ensure she is up to date. He's the type of teacher who does experiments for science and tells the students, \"What's the objective of this experiment? Go home and ask your parents..\" :skeptical: I mean... seriously? : :slapshead:

I agree with you on this. How teachers and principals handle these feedbacks are important to us. It really shows how the people-person factor works... if they do have PR in the first place. It shows whether they value partnership with parents and students alike... whether they have a heart in what it is they do.

While we personally went home still :mad: after meeting the teacher... the Principal couldn't have handled the situation more beautifully so much so that we were slightly appeased. The day after, the teacher himself wrote to us that he would like to work with us on getting some initiatives in place and would value our input. He then shared that he had bad experiences with parents who gave him a hard time hence his stance then. I just told him, no two people are alike. I suppose with my genuine gesture of involvement and i guess a more positive handling of confrontation, he took it in good stead and though things didn't improve beyond expectations, we still maintained good relationship... and he was more alert. The children enjoyed more fun learning thru games/mini contest/group projects in class on and off after that. At the very least my girl was slightly happier to attend lessons... As we knew we couldn't change anything, the only way to work it out was a win-win situation for both of us.

Which was why i quoted before, turnover is inevitable.. the teachers you met who were good or came highly recommended; may not necessarily gonna be teaching your child's class. A school that produces one or two top scorers may not necessarily be a better school compared to another. It may jolly well have come from say a GEP class with a more motivating teacher and the student may have had external help from enrichment centres or personal tutors that others may not afford. I find there is more to a school's measure of success than just mere display of results. But that's just me..

Yes, definitely. A teacher who inspires will go a looongg way in motivating children to move ahead confidently.. happily.. and independently long after they have taught them. I've had the privilege to meet many and we keep in touch.

How parents engage teaching staff and heads also make a difference as to how a positive resolution can be compromised. However having said that, not all teachers & P's have positive attitudes when faced with feedbacks or complaints. Some may show offensive-denial and may take it badly but good ones will take the time to listen or even jot down the issues and give it a thought before replying to parents. Not only that, they will ensure that they follow up with parents and students from time to time.

So, a little luck oso needed that's for sure. :xedfingers:
