      I have another 2 questions :

      Question 1
      a)A famine occurred in a village of Bragu and it needed 100 000kg of rice. However, only 80% of the total amount of rice required was sent to Bragu. Out of the amount sent, 10% of it was spoilt and 1/6 of the remaining amount was lost. What perecentage of the total amount of rice required was the village still short of ? (Managed to solve this question with answer 40% , need help with 1b)

      b)A company decided to send some rice to meet the shortage in (a). Assuming
      that the same proportion of the rice will be spoilt and lost, what percentage of the original total amount of rice required need to be sent?

      Question 2 :
      The cost of an orange was 1/3 that of a papaya. John spent 5/7 of his money on 4 oranges and 12 papayas. He then used the rest of his money to buy 2 more papayas and some oranges. How many oranges did he buy in all ?

      Thanks πŸ™‚

        Hi MathsGuru,

        Please help

        1. Emily collected 1 1/3 times as many beads as Jason. If Emily bought 48 more beads and Jason bought 13 more beads. Emily would have twice as many beads as Jason. How many beads did Emily collect at first ?

        2. There were twice as many apples as oranges in the basket at first, when 19 apples and 5 oranges were added; the number of apples became thrice as many as the number of oranges. How many fruits were there in the basket at first ?

        3. At first, Ann & Betty had $3000 altogehter, Ann had $400 more than Betty. After Ann spent 1/5 of the amount of money that Betty spent, Ann had twice as much as Betty. How much did Ann spend ?

        4. John and Mary had some red and blue marbles. John had twice as many red marbles as Mary. Mary had twice as many blue marbles as John. After John lost 80 red marbles, his ratio of red to blue marbles became 2: 1.
        After Mary bought another 280 blue marbles, her ration of red to blue marbles become 1:3. How many blue marbles did Mary have at first ?

          Q1

          E [][][][][------48------] (4u+48)
          J [][][][-13-] (3u+13)

          4u+48 --> 2*(3u+13)
          2u --> 22
          1u --> 11

          No. of beads Emily collected at first = 4u = 4*11 = 44 (Ans)

          Q2

          A [-][-][--------19-------] (2u+19)
          O [-][-5-] (1u+5)

          2u+19 --> 3*(1u+5)
          1u --> 4

          No. of fruits were there in the basket at first = 3u = 3*4 = 12 (Ans)

            Q3

            A [-------------][-------------][] ($1700)
            B [-------------][][][][][] ($1300)

            [] denotes the amount of money that spent

            [-------------][][][][][] --> 1300
            [-------------][][][][][] + [-------------][][][][][] --> 1300 + 1300
            [-------------][-------------]+10*[] --> 2600
            1700 + 9*[] --> 2600
            9*[] --> 2600-1700 = 900
            [] --> 900/9 = 100

            Amount of money that Ann spent = $100 (Ans)

                Hi,

                Out of the amount of rice that were sent, 10% was spoilt and 1/6 of remaining amount was lost.
                So, amount of rice that were spoilt and lost as a percentage of amount of rice sent
                = 10% + 1/6 x 90%
                = 25%

                Shortage = 40% of 100 000 kg = 40 000kg = 75% of amount of rice to be sent
                Amount of rice to be sent
                = 40 000 / 0.75 kg

                Amount of rice to be sent as a percentage of original amount

                = 40 000/0.75 x 1/100 000 x 100 %
                = 160/3 %
                = 53β…“%

                Q2.

                  Can anyone help me?

                  Keane bought some marbles and gave half of them to Leon. Leon bought some stamps and gave half of them to Keane.

                  Keane used 5 stamps and Leon gave away 11 marbles. the ratio of the number of stamps to the number of marbles Keane had left then became 1:7 and the ratio of the number of stamps to the number of marbles Leon had left become 1:5.

                  How many stamps did Leon buy?

                  Thanks

                    The solution is this one which was discussed earlier -http://www.flickr.com/photos/62167097@N02/5932660565/in/photostream - give it a shot ?

                    cheers.

                      Q8
                      A circle of diameter 2 cm rolls along the circumference of a circle of diameter 12 cm, without slipping, until it returns to its starting position. Given that the smaller circle has turned x degree about its centre, find the value of x.
