Actually i have students from 2.5 yr old and 1 to 1 lessons did not spoil their interests. In fact they are so interested and motivated. But of cos it depends on individual.

Young children have mood swings so do not expect them to learn like a 5/6 yr old child. However, most of my 2-3 yr old students are coping very well as i have lots of activities to keep them occupied and motivate them. But again, there are some children who cannot take it and will have to wait for half a year or 1 yr later.

But you won’t know if you don’t try it. So maybe you can send a child for a trial lesson first.

One of my girlfriends child was doing Violin with Nafa. Child is very smart and practically mom makes child practise everyday cos there is also a so called surprise test.. Her child did not make it during test and asks to leave! It's a common practise. Now they resort to taking private lessons. Unless we r prepared to put our child to that kind of 'Nafa' environment.. They only take in cream of e crop.

The price of excellence is hardwork. And if hardwork can complement in-born talent and interest, we have a champion in the making. If the kid has talent, but no interest in exploiting the talent for whatever reasons, then forcing them on a daily drill accomplishes nothing, or even worse, turn them off completely. Go for NAFA only if your child has a burning desire to excel in music. Otherwise, go for something a lot more lightweight.

Can anybody tell me how is Yamaha Junior Special Advanced Course (JSAC)? My daughter, 6 yrs old, was just selected. She has taken one-to-one private lesson for 8 months and progressed very fast. JSAC is only good at music appreciation instead of skills. Another is which is better, private teacher or music school, like Yamaha or Nafa. Will music school provide more chances for the students, e.g. concert or competition?

                Thank you.

JSAC is more on music appreciation and training other aspects like ear etc. For concerts and competitions,it depends on individual teachers(private). Some teachers hold concerts where as some doesn’t. In schools, only selected ones are given a chance to perform and compete but for myself i allow all my students to have a chance to perform every year and as for competition, it is just within my students. For gr 1 to diploma level, they get a trophy for playing well for the recital. I don’t wish them to see it as a competition as some of them are still very young. It is just a way to motivate them instead of demoralising them.

                      Hi Pianojazzy

have you heard of Kawai Music school?
Heard their students are taking trinity guildhall exam instead of ABRSM
Currently my gal with Yamaha for JXC & im thinking of withdrawing her & transfer her to kawai for individual class. not sure whether is it the right choice for her…would you be able to advise.

That's exactly what I did with my son. But Kawai wasn't right for my son; he couldn't click with the teacher. They also increased the fees. So after a couple of months, I stopped Kawai. Now my son's with Award Music School in Katong Mall, a family-owned business. Hope this will last longer.
