Castle House,

Its one of the exercises in the book. Think they are trying to tell them that there are a lot of ways to do the sum. And its easier that way.

Prior to this, the book taught them another method :

      Let’s say 34 + 6. Then the kids will split 34 into 30 and 4. Then they use 4 to + 6 and add 10 to 30.

They bringing across different methods of doing simple sum.

Think I will just make sure they understand the basics solid solid before trying to show them other methods of addition / subtracting.

          But thanks for sharing πŸ˜„

You are right. The most important thing is for them to know the basic first.
Hmm... There are + and - in the sum. I copied a question out of the book...

                34 - 8 = __ + __ =

                Suppose to take 34 - 10 and use the 10 to - 8...
                So 34 - 8 = 24 + 2 = 26

For 2007 kid, think this is too difficult. Unless of course your child is very advanced.

I only discover that my DS know simple addition through revising with my DD1. I was pleasantly surprised. πŸ˜„

:yikes: That's very difficult for a 4Yo kid.
:congrats: on your GM1..
