Opinions of the Primary School Registration System
-
I’ve read through a few pages of archives.
How about scrapping P2B totally? After P2A2, all remaining vacancies to be given to P2C, and balloting is done according to distance from school. Let the volunteer work be genuinely volunteer work; let the ones who have faith genuinely go to the church/temple for that reason; let the ones who sign up at clans memberships be the ones who genuinely think there is a reason to do so etc…
In this case, there is no need to give carve out another phase to give special treatment to this group of people. -

That is actually an interesting idea. It would also spare those with genuine intentions from unnecessary misunderstandings. To share our experience, we attend a church with affiliations to a certain group of schools in Singapore. And since I had pre-school children who would be undergoing P1 registration in a couple of years when we first started, we were oftentimes given the \"look\", and even had people come up to us and say, \"I hope you are not attending our church just to register your children for our primary schools.\" Most unpleasant and unnecessary as we were going to register our children with our old schools, so didn't need the affiliation.I've read through a few pages of archives.

As for parent volunteer, why not ask those whose children have already got into the school to PV? Then it would prevent those disappointing situations of parents who have PVed and did not manage to get into their school of choice. After all, as a parent with a kid already in the school, it would be helpful to participate as that benefits the school (and ultimately our children who are studying there). Plus we get to know the school teachers/curriculum/CCA's/programs better. If anything, our kids may just be proud and happy to see Mummy and/or Daddy participate in school activities - of course, I am largely referring to primary kids; secondary/teenage children may not be too thrilled by that as most teenagers are known to be embarrassed by their parents (been there, done that) -

My sentiments exactly.

for my DS school, parents whose child or children are existing students do volunteer at the school under the PSG or parent support group. And that the response are quite overwhelming as available volunteer places for each event are taken up usually within the hour of annoucement. -

Wow! That is one lucky school to have such supportive parents like you. Maybe, one day, PSG participation in school event also must ballot?JGMum:

P2B provides opportunity for those who lacks the P2A advantage to gain priority, so far, I still find the current system comprehensive although some teaking is still needed. As I mentioned in \"PV\" thread, transparency in PV is much needed before any national wide scandal pop up.

All schools have PSG. Newer schools will take some time to build up their base. Those that are established are usually well supported by PSG PLUS alumni.JGMum:

I believe PV, GRL and church / clan affiliation started off as a mean to reward true volunteers for the time they have put in. However, along the way, the spirit of volunteerism gets lost and everyone gets upset for not being rewarded for the time & effort they have put in. -

Precisely.Totally illogical. This is a national primary school admission system and there is such a glaring GAP in the system. MOE keeps emphasing that home proximity rule will apply when demand exceeds supply from 2A onwards. But in reality, home proximity rule can never be applied in 2A else there will be NO 2B/C. Too bad for those aspiring to get into the school. Your mummy and daddy didn't study here, so you never gonna get a chance as school has insufficent vacancies even to cater to offsprings of old boys and girls.

The current squash on 2B/2C spaces is directly due to preferential admission in 2A, which basically amounts to a free pass based on Daddy's/Mummy's old connections, regardless of whether he/she was a sleeping member of the school population until graduation at PSLE. That, in my view, is the greatest injustice of all of this, and the most illogical, more than selection for PV, more than home-school distance. -

Just wondering, wouldn't most have a \"free pass\" at Phase 2A if they are Singaporean/PR and have studied in Singapore as a child? Unless their former school closed down. Even if their former school merged with others to form a new school, they can still register under Phase 2A for the new school. I read in another thread that former students of Ang Mo Kio North (which merged to become today's Anderson Primary) qualify to register under Phase 2A for Anderson Primary.mummy168:

One issue that is often mentioned in this forum is distance from one's former primary school. In which case, one also has a choice of uprooting and moving closer to their former primary school to cut travelling time. Or, stay put and have one parent/grandparent expend time and effort to chauffeur the child to and from school. Or the child has to spend time in travelling. Either way, there are choices (though some not as convenient) if one wants to register in Phase 2A.
In my humble opinion, I personally do not think that Phase 2A is unfair, because (unless I am missing something) most have the opportunity to register in Phase 2A.
