i tell my kids, if there is going to be more sms to and fro, for goodness sake, just pickup the fixed line phone and talk over it and get it done with, instead of one or two words per sms sometimes …

I don’t quite understand why many kids like to SMS so much. My 3 kids (ages 12 to 17) do not carry handphones. They said they did not need even though I have spare a phone and prepaid number. But I will make them bring a handphone whenever they need to go overseas for school events.

You asked a question an I'll give u my answer, honestly.

For me, I use a handphone to communicate. Example, school/cca teachers send me something and I'll get it within 5 seconds. If it were to be sent to ur parents, might take hours. Another purpose for me, as a public transport fan, I message rare ovcurebxea to friends. They can't wait because by informing them ASAP, they can calculate positions and timings. If I wait till I'm home, the bus might alrd be off sv. And of xourse dot recreational use, to chat with friends. You may say, why not use landline, but would y start complaining when your sons and daughters endlessly hog the phone? It's the 21st century, ppl demand connectivity. Meeting ur friends once a day isno longer enough. That's why we have hsndphones. To stay in contact all the time. Parents might find other ways or recreation, but my generation prefer phones. It's just like 30 yrs ago u play catching, tree climbing etc. Now for teens, all these are alrd outta trend.

Snowman, having a handphone is a privilege, not rights even if you are using it for communication. Ultimately, it is the parents who pay until you are old enough. The rights of a child is to be protected, cared for in their basic needs until they are old enough to be on their own. Handphone is not really a basic need. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against children having a handphone, I give one to my child at 6YO and until now, she knows it is a privilege, not her rights. And so far she has been responsible in her ways in using the phone for the past 3 years and I continue to enjoy supporting her in using the phone, in fact I remind her to carry it and she enjoys communicating just like you. So it can be a joyful thing between you and dad if you manage it.

As for receiving messages from school, again it's an arrangement that can be made by you with your parents. My child gets notified within split seconds I receive a mail or message from the teachers but her classmates don't. So communication is not just on the handphone, communication with parents is just as critical to achieve your wants.
