Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

My view is that there should be as little impediment as possible to entry of students to their school of choice. The only things I would give concession to would be logistical considerations, and, to a small degree, priority for those who add to the ‘ethos’ or ‘culture’ of the school. Whatever the case, it cannot be that 60%+ of places in popular schools are locked away by end of Phase 2A. And its not as if ALL of the parents of students who enrolled in 2A are big contributors to the school, mostly are hangers-on. So far, no one has argued that this is not an inequitable situation.
So, what are the obstacles in the way of making this happen? "Too difficult lah", "Can’t please everyone", "Back to square one".
Seriously? For a forum of go-getting parents who seem to have a solution for every problem, there is none to be had here? Or is it simply a lack of motivation to do so (or motivation to maintain status quo)?
So I say, Phase 1 for siblings, Phase 2 (not more than 30% of enrolment) for ‘special’ priority groups, be they alumni, church, clan, GRL, whatever, to be defined, and Phase 3 by distance, but cast the net wide, 4-5km (I’ve checked), and you will dilute out whatever price concentrations for property you may be concerned about, for there will be a few schools with overlapping catchment areas. Ballot for Phase 2 and 3 should applicants exceed places. Phase 2 needs to be finessed, but overall this is clean, and levels the playing field considerably.
The issue is that Phase 2A completely is out of control, and Phase 2B (PV/GRL/Clan) is chaotic and uneven. Phase 2 in my proposal will be a little like that too, but at least it is capped and the damage will be limited if abused. Can you imagine a situation whereby eventually for a popular school, it is effectively "No outsiders may apply"? What kind of Singapore education system would that be then? We are getting there. -

No, no system can please everyone. But wherever possible, the system in place must be fair to the majority and transparent.mummyo:
Exactly my point! No one system can please everyone!
People who are complaining are the ones caught out by the system.
I rest my case.

Thankfully buds house oredi like Finland..But if there's entrance exams at P1, it's no longer a choice to have enrichments or not. I can foresee the emergence of \"hot\" kindy too. I think right now, there are \"hot\" kindy already.
I want to migrate to Finland
Except for the climate of course. Yes, hot
kindy, as in hot weather in house. :rotflmao: -

good idea..there used to be no cap for those applying for phase 2b last time..3Boys:
The problem is with the increasing flood of applicants at Phase 2A (children of alumni).
Phase 2A(2) shld limit itself to \"For a child whose sibling has studied in the school of choice\".
Then create another phase for \"For a child whose parent has studied in the school of choice\" with a quota. -
st start early and chope 1st....

Can can, to increase chances of interaction, sign up for the enrichment centres in Coronation Plaza, shop at the NTUC there, go for dental check-up there, then have lunch / dinner in the eateries. :evil:st start early and chope 1st....

Have been through that phrase too. Personally i do went in with my eyes open. However, there are some unfairness that could be introduced. Eg member of clan. There are not clear guidelines on how long must the members be with the clan before they can have the "ticket" to 2B.
Saw some mommy posted previously she was with the clan for less than 1 yr and yet gotten the "ticket" to 2B. While ones need to be with the clan for at least 2 yr (from the same clan, am not comparing with another). If i’m the PV who has given direct contribution, i would be hopping mad if i know of such cases and yet my child is balloted out. Cos all these pple deprive the PV too.
Ofcos there are others that we don’t know about. -
actually not very ethical for the school to allow PV if their affiliation has a huge pool of members, unless that particular school have not been very popular in the past and had a trend of vacancies after 2C.

i duno .. have to \"boost up\" popularity of the school
