Hi, any latest update about sji? Hows the teachers?
-
u can read the letter from parents on their website
http://www.sji.edu.sg/subpage.php?id=298

My son is currently in Sec 3 and was one of the few from his top SAP primary school to have opted for SJI.
My son has grown to be a caring , responsible, happy grown up teenager and a team player, one who is proud of being a Josephian !
This is in no small part attributed to the school’s excellent value added both academically and also character formation and development. There could be a mix of good, excellent and mediocre teachers in any one school but the institutionalised process and available special programs makes the key difference in a good school.
I have no regrets. -
I heard SJI will be moving, does anyone know to where & when?

Hi SJI Parents - I notice from SJI website they offer computer studies/computer science. Is this offered to all the children? My son is very interested in computer science and wants to learn programming etc. I notice the the Sec3 syllb for SJI covers C programming etc. Do all the children have a shot at applying for this subject?
Thanks -
My son is current in the STDP for Computer Science in Sec 2. We were given a rude shock middle of this year when the principle anounced that they are scrapping O level computer science. So even though my son has put in tremendous time and effort on computer science, he cannot continue with this subject which he loves and do well next year. Reason? The school wants to concentrate resource on its new IP programme and not willing to spend funds on this subject for the O level track. It is disappointing because it was not communicated to us parents formally until the parent meeting this year. If we had known, we would not have allow him to be in the STDP Computer Science programme from Sec 1. Sadly, it is quite irresponsible of the school to just drop this half way through. They should have the decency to let this last batch of boys complete the programme. Unfortunately IP is too important for them. So if you want to put your son in SJI for the Computer Science course, don’t. They have scrapped it. All students will now only do a computer studies subject which is just learning to use basic computer software programmes. It is still a great school, but sadly, the principal is clearly only motivated by one objective now.

Hi Dnls_mum
Thanks for this update. I think SJI is a good school - but very far away from where we live. So if we had considered the school, it would only have been for the Computer Science program. If our son makes the cut off we are otherwise quite happy with some good neighbourhood schools near our home - at least will spare him the journey.
I agree with you - that they should have at least let the students who are on the program complete it -and stopped taking new intakes.
My husband is SJI alumni - and he keeps on saying that SJI is changing and becoming more an elitist school - nothing wrong with that at all - but I guess, it would not suit my son in that case.
So thanks for your note. -

My son truely enjoys his time at SJI. Most of the teachers are good and genuinely concern about the boys. I can really feel their sincerity and concern everytime I meet them. The assistant Principal who handles moral education, Mr Ang is truely a wonderful guy so cares for the boys' overall well-being.
The problem seems to be with the school management, the principal in particular. I understand that he was brought in to start the IP. Maybe because that is his KPI, he is willing to sacrifice everything for this one objective. This seems to contravene the whole motto of SJI and the Christian Brothers' School. In fact, I was one of the parent that the parent support group invited to have a dialogue with the OBA/committee before the IP was approved and I frankly support it for the good of the school. Without IP, they are losing the top boys from their affiliated primary schools to other IP schools. I was one of those who truely and sincerely supported a dual track for boys of different abilities, even though my boy was already in Sec 1 and will not benefit from the IP. The OBA/committee had promised that they will not neglext the non-IP track, but now in reality it does not seem so. Maybe the problem in the execution or rather the executor.
Even the boys feel that all that matters to the school now is IP and I understand some teachers are very unhappy with this attitute too. Perhaps we all feel a littled betrayed by the Principal. This principal is not one who communicates with parents. They are moving to a holding school, but he refuses to divulge where the holding school will be. Rumour says ITE West. Maybe he is worried that if that is announced before this PSLE posting execise, intake this year will be affected. Frankly, I hope this principal doesn't stay long, otherwise, the moral values of SJI may slowly be eroded. -
