Top Primary school?

I agree that using the top Tscore is not a good measure of "defining a top school" - eg , just bcos 1 student scores 290 … and the rest score 240, it should still be considered an average school.


Using mean-Tscore (average score) may not be a good measure too coz you just need a few "bad eggs" (i mean low Tscore) to bring down a school ranking & that will not be good for the children coz schools might "cajole/psycho parents to pull out weaker kids" & it will go against the basic principle of providing "primary education" to the young.

I think the Median score would be a fair gauge in this sense. ie if a school top score is 265 (compared to top psle score of 290) but if it has 40 students with 265 …and another 40students with 250, then this should be a good school ?

In any case, I agree that they shouldn’t start ranking primary schools coz i fear the educators may "lose directions" ie instead of nurturing our children, they are just concerned with churning out perfect numbers (altho it is already happening, we shouldn’t encourage it).

I would think the follow Pri schools which have GEP programme would most likely (although not always) produce Top PSLE results.

- Anglo-Chinese School (Primary) Boys
- Catholic High School (Primary)* Boys
- Henry Park Primary School Co-ed
- Nan Hua Primary School* Co-ed
- Nanyang Primary School* Co-ed
- Raffles Girls' Primary School Girls
- Rosyth School Co-ed
- St Hilda's Primary School Co-ed
- Tao Nan School* Co-ed

I agree with you. After all, they are the top 1% of the whole cohort.

This makes me wonder something. How does those students (in GEP school but not in GEP class) fare? Wonder any students (that come from normal classes) actually tops the PSLE results? I will be impressed if normal classes can also produce top PSLE result. Then that school can be really considered.

I agreed that those so called top schools are because of GEP, we should really look at the normal classes results for better comparision

Honestly I am not sure if there is such a thing as a top primary school based on the efforts of the school. All schools have the same mission set by MOE to deliver the same thing. If you hear from them, even teachers they have no control, it's all from MOE. So what then would you consider as top primary school? It definitely cannot be results alone because results are typically parents-driven in today's context in some schools. Every school has the best cream of the crop and the worst performers. Some schools have more top performers because parents are more affluent.

You should look for the following instead:
1. Environment where you want the kind of children your children mingle with. It can either be you choose a similar environment kids as yours or you may choose something that your child would stand out in the school instead

2. The kind of friends you want to influence your children (i.e. the majority spread)

3. The programmes that a school can offer to a child to nurture the child other than academics.

4. Understand the emphasis of the school, in which area.

5. What kind of environment motivates your child? One where he/she always at the top or one that he/she always hides into the general group?

If results is your only selection of a top school, then you must want to rub shoulders and keep up with affluent parents who are willing to invest in heaps and heaps of enrichment.
